best programming-related book i have ever read,
By Paul C Yonet (Pacific Palisades, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: JavaServer Pages Fast & Easy Web Development w/CD (Paperback)
i already know a little about java, but the whole jsp concept is kind of fuzzy to me. i already have three jsp books, and they are good, but they are way over my head....too advanced. i have never had a beginner programming book that was as well written as this book. i have already completed a few chapters...and i loved this book from page one. i recommend that you do what i do...which is to have your nearest bookstore order the book for you, read the first chapter, and if you like it, buy it at the store or from here. it is a little cheaper from here. when you get more advanced, i recommend the following books: "Professional JSP" from wrox Press, and the 2nd edition of "Professional JavaServer Programming" also from wrox, which i think will be out in a couple months. but for now, just focus your time for the next few months on Bakharia's book. i have the wrox books that i recommended above, but they are more for the intermediate to advanced jsp programmer.

Simple but Powerful,
By A Customer
This review is from: JavaServer Pages Fast & Easy Web Development w/CD (Paperback)
This is not your average JSP book. You'll learn Java basics before you start creating JSP pages. Everything is explained step by step with lots of images. The examples are very useful. This book has a shopping cart and employee phone directory plus many simple examples like sending email, making images and validating forms. You will also get a good overview of servlets, javabeans, xml and tag libs. It is all a very easy read too(took me a weekend). Best way to get started, but you may still need to purchase a more complex book once you master the basics.

This book was the first book I read on JSP pages. Thank God. The book is very easy to read and understand the code is clear and simple. If you think you are ready for JSP and are looking for a book to teach you the basics this is the book. It also comes with a CD that has a copy of Jrun and a database to install on your PC and give it all a try. This is a huge help.

Files cannot be run ...,
This review is from: JavaServer Pages Fast & Easy Web Development w/CD (Paperback)
When I first read this book, I really glad I bought it because it is easy to follow. But now i have second thought. The source files for the entire chapter 12 cannot be run. It seems that there are mistakes in the written code. If anyone has figured out how to correct the problems, i would appreciate if you could kindly drop me a mail. The most annoying part of all, the publisher web site does not post any errata or forum whatsoever to answer readers' qury.

I needed to learn JSP fast to perform some testing of a JSP Plug-in to our application (I'm a Senior QA Engineer for a Software Company). I bought this book and learned everything I need to know quickly! The information is presented in the book in clear, easy to follow examples. For each topic that is covered a thorough example is given. The author doesn't waste time with long winded speeches, etc. They get straight into the heart of JSP and show you what you need to know from the ground up. I've read lots of Computer Books, and this is by far the best I've ever read. If you need/want to learn JSP, this is the only book you need.

Excellent Beginners Guide to JSP,
By A Customer
This review is from: JavaServer Pages Fast & Easy Web Development w/CD (Paperback)
This book is very well written and easy to understand. It will get you creating JSP apps in a matter of minutes. I really enjoyed the chapter on database access with JDBC. It explained sql and then went on to do popular things like master-detail pages, alternate row coloring and even paged search results (using the cached rowset bean). Very practical. Other books don't cover this stuff. There is also a chapter on tag libraries. I thought they were gonna be complex to build but with step by step instructions and lots of screen grabs I can make tags that have parameters and bodies. It covers many more JSP topics with examples too. JavaMail, XML, servlets and javaBeans too. Overall I like this book because it is simple and to the point - No long paragraphs. Just what you need to learn JSP.

Poor Technical Editing,

There are numerous mistakes in the examples. I am not done with the book and have already found one file that won't compile and an interactive web page, that demonstrates do/while loops, that does not execute accurately. I have tried to contact all the email addresses I could find on their website and all but one have been returned as invalid. If you are brand new to programming I would hesitate purchasing until they have adequate technical support.

Fast track to JSP,

This book is great! It is one of the few beginners books that manages to simplify complex JSP topics. All books for beginners should be written like this. Many practical examples are also provided. The sample shopping cart introduced me to a lot of concepts.
