Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This is a set of 27 short autobiographical interviews conducted by the author and his collaborators in Java in 1987-88. While a wide range of occupational types are included, the emphasis on more or less urban, middle-class Javanese is likely to give a distorted impression about the Javanese population--with its vast numbers of rural farmers--to readers not already familiar with the region. Nonetheless, the individuality and determination of these people is immediately apparent, as is their overwhelming sense of history: of the glories of their precolonial kingdoms, the ignominy of Dutch colonial rule, the horrors of Japanese occupation during World War II, and the pride that has come with independence. Everyone seems conscious of how these events have shaped their lives. For academic collections.

It's an amazing book recording the auto-bibliography of average Javanese people. I wish to read more books like this.
