Michael Torke's "December" is a composition rich with the complexity of emotional and musical sophistication. It breathes deep feeling and artistry, is comprised of much orchestral innovation and is one of the most moving, exciting compositions I have ever heard. BRAVO.

Much of so-called "serious" or "classical" music composed today is hardly heard, or dies off quickly. Why? Well, there's most often good reason. Sergei Rachmaninoff nailed it in 1939, and I feel his words still hold today:

"The new kind of music seems to come, not from the heart, but from the head. Its composers think rather than feel. They have not the capacity to make their works exult...They meditate, protest, analyze, reason, calculate, and brood -- but they do not exult...Why modern in this case? It grows old as soon as born, for it comes into being contaminated with dry rot."

Michael Torke hasn't yet qualified as a musical genius, and we don't know whether his music will last or become immortal. But he's a serious composer who is certainly no dry rotter and his music DOES exult. In fact, it charms and sparkles and now and then soars.

Torke's "Adjustable Wrench" captures a spirit of working Americana, and "Bright Blue Music" is a treasure to thrill to. I especially like playing it when driving along PCH through the rushing seaside air. Torke's music, of which this album is a good sample, is fresh. It's cool. It sparkles.
