Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

A teen film ought to have a cheap and sleazy teen soundtrack, something frivolous and silly. Resurrecting German heavy-metal legends the Scorpions ("Rock You Like a Hurricane," no less) satisfies the silly part. For frivolous, there are several generic '90s alterna-rockers sounding a bit more charged (Letters to Cleo, Ednaswap). Not to be lost in the shuffle are Imperial Teen, who sashay in with a sprightly, silly romp called "Yoo Hoo," while most of the others recall the fun, fun, fun vibe of retro-rock of years past. Shampoo evince the excitability of early-'80s new wave with "Don't Call Me Babe." The Friggs' "Bad Word for a Good Thing" re-creates the neo-garage revival of the mid '80s. The Donnas approximate the Kim Fowley-inspired female teen dream of the Runaways. The Prissteens squash the '60s girl-group formula through a ratty distortion pedal. Break out the Clearasil! --Rob O'Connor

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!, July 30, 2002
By Galen (Hell) - See all my reviews
I am obsessed with the movie Jawbreaker, everyone I know knows that. So of course, I HAD to get the soundtrack, and after basically a year of searching I finally found it in a bookstore in Seattle, and got it, and was not dissapointed. The soundtrack is very enjoyable, it has fun music from the movie, although I know the song "Trouble" is only in the trailers, I haven't heard Ednaswap's "Next to You" or Howie Beno and Cruella Deville's remake of the Cyndi Lauper classic "She Bop" but, it's still an awesome soundtrack, here's what I think of the songs:

1. "Yoo Hoo" By Imperial Teen- Who couldn't love this song? You'd have to see the movie to get the song, and appreciate it. Of course, this song is when Courtney, Julie (one time Fern/Vylette), and Marcie are walking down the halls, it's also at the end of the movie during the credits.

2. "I See" By Letters to Cleo-I love Letters to Cleo, Kay Hanley's voice is magical. I love this song, it has a great beat, it's fun to listen to, I love it. This song is the part when Courtney, Julie, and Marcie get into the car, and drive to the diner.

3. "Next to You" By Ednaswap-I love this song! Ednaswap rocks. It isn't featured in the movie though.

4. "Don't Call me Babe" By Shampoo- I love this song, Shampoo is a very good band. This song is at the part when Vylette is taking over the school, such as the part between the girl in the bathroom and the goth girl: "Haven't you heard about Vylette? It's all about Vylette".

5. "Bad Word For a Good Thing" By The Friggs-I really like this song, it has catchy lyrics, it's a good song. This song is in the part when Zach drives Julie home, and she gives him her #.

6. Stay in Bed" By Grand Mal-The only complaint I have about this song, is that it's very long, or at least it seems that way, all in all, it's a good song. This song is when Julie and Zach are looking for the picture and the diner to prove what Courtney did.

7. "Flow" By Transister-I think this is my favorite song on the album. It's kind of a sad song though, but I really like it. This song plays when Julie sees Liz swimming in the pool.

8. "She Bop" By Howie Beno and Cruella Deville-This is a good song, I like the original by Cyndi Lauper a lot too. This song dosen't play in the movie either

9. "Water Boy" By Imperial Teen-I like "Yoo Hoo" better, but this song is also good. This song plays when Vylette is sitting on the front of her car dancing.

10. "Rock You Like a Hurricane" By The Scorpions-I really like this song, it's an oldie but a goodie, and very worth llistening to. This song plays when Courtney is telling Vera Cruz about Liz's so called "obsession" with strange men, and then shows Courtney in a bar with guest appearence by Marilyn Manson (He's still ugly without makeup)

11. "Rock 'N' Roll Machine" By The Donnas-I like this song, The Donnas are a very good group, and I liked their cameo in the movie. This song plays at the prom.

12. "Beat You Up" By The Prissteens-this song is ok, it's worth listening to, I like it, it kind of reminds me of one of those old '50s songs about Boyfriends coming back (haha). This song plays when Julie is about to get on the bus, and Zach offers her a ride.

13. "Trouble" by Shampoo-I like this song, the only problem, is the the lead singer yells the song more then sings it, but it's good. This song is only in the trailers...

Well, there's my review of the songs. The songs I wish were on there are "Volcano Girls" by Veruca Salt which plays at the beginning when it shows the jawbreakers being made. And a song called "Heartbreaker" by The Friggs (which I can't find ANYWHERE. If you can find it, please help me out and tell me!) it plays when Courtney tells Vylette she needs a boyfriend, and tells her to sign up for the school play with Zach, so then Julie won't have him. But Anyways...Enjoy this CD, and good luck finding one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best soundtrack since Clueless, August 14, 2000
By Gabriel Emerson (Austin, TX USA) - See all my reviews
I've loved Howie Beno's work since he was in Drag/13mg, and his She Bop with Cruella DeVille is gutsy and aggressive. Yoo Hoo is an instant classic, and the scenes from the movie with them walking slow motion ala 'Suburbia' are forever linked in my mind.

Transister's 'Flow' is a very sweet, sad song, very moving. Not since the Cure's 'Disintegration' have I gotten so choked up by a song.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jawbreaker, March 16, 2002
A Kid's Review
I think that the "Jawbreaker" soundtrack rocks. Although I am dissapointed that Veruca Salt's "Volcano Girls" wasn't on it. "Jawbreaker", I think, is the best movie in the world, I love it, and I love the soundtrack. I really like "Flow" by Transister, "I See" by Letters to Cleo (they rock), and "Yoo Hoo" by Imperial Teen (whenever I hear it, I picture Rose McGowan, Rebecca Gayheart, and Julie Benz walking slow-mo down the halls of Reagan High). It's a a great soundtrack, and a great movie.
