Book Description

March 26, 2001 0838562981 978-0838562987 22nd
This book focuses on the ever-increasing knowledge about the relationship of pathogenic microorganisms to human disease and the application of that knowledge to the diagnosis and treatment of these illnesss. It covers the basic and clinical aspects of microbiology, immunology, bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology through a consistent format in which the morphology and identification, pathogenesis, clinical findings, diagnostic lab tests, treatment, and prevention and control of each organism is discussed. The book also includes a chapter on clinical correlations that features cases with brief discussions of the differential diagnosis and management of infections. The 22nd edition will be updated throughout and two to three new cases (anthrax, plague and botulism) will be added to the clinical correlations chapter. Recognizing the need to offer this information in as concise a format as possible, the authors will reduce the virology section by approximately 50 book pages.

Editorial Reviews

Review

In and of itself this is a very worthwhile book to have in one's library. However, owners of a previous edition may find it hard to justify purchasing this one because much of the book is unchanged, including the price. ---Weighted Numerical Score: 87 - 3 Stars

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much information, August 6, 2000
By

This review is from: Medical Microbiology (Paperback)
This book offers a very comprehensive look at microbiology and virology (with some immunology and parasitology thrown in); unfortunately, that's not a good thing if you're trying to study from it. The chapters are full of information on lab values and other minutiae that will be of interest to only those who make a living in the field. Otherwise, you'll have to search hard to pick out the relevant details that are worth remembering. There are definitely better, easier to use books on the market than this one

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book as foundation for medical microbiology students, November 12, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Jawetz, Melnick, & Adelberg's Medical Microbiology (Paperback)
I used this as one of my required texts for my microbiology class in med school. It had very good sections on parasitology, viruses, etc. It was fun learning the what parasites are endemic to certain regions of the world and what symptoms they cause. I was used the following: Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi. This second book was great because it was thorough in the aspects of test preparation in these various ways: it helped me prepare for the type of questions asked by my microbiology professor. In this way when I was studying I knew which facts to study harder and to know better. I easily got in the top 1% of my medical microbiology in grades with the help of these two books. I give each book five stars.

Books like this are difficult to just sit down and read. This Lange Micro book however has pretty good 10-15 page sections that great for rapid review before a test. It is also indexed well, so it is a good "go to" book when needing answers.
