Jaws is a very old school nes game which I find to be very entertaining. If you do not like nes games...duh don't buy it. If you do I'd argue this is one of the better games to have for the system. You start on a boat and the game has somewhat of an old school -- EXTREMELY BASIC -- rpg element. after a while of moving your boat Jaws fin will hit your boat putting you in a 2d fighting screen. Sorta like Zelda 2 but in no way am I comparing them, I feel this works for Jaws and not Zelda. NOW IS YOUR CHANCE to hurt jaws with your cannons.It is inevitable, eventually Jaws will hit your boat and you will be swimming, dodging, and shooting at different fish fighting for your life.Eventually the screen will clear. After this you will return to the previous screen in your boat right where you left off. Repeat Above.
I have not defeated Jaws ( He had one Freakin hit point left!!!) yet so I dunno know what happens the first time you kill him.
If for some reason I only have a limited time to game this has always been a good quick fix before work or something. Buy but don't break your wallet over it!

In this game you are required to perform the same shooting task repeatedly until you want to toss it out...very disappointing.

Well, we all know what The Nerd thinks of LJN licensed Nintendo games. I didn't think that the horror movie trio of games licensed by LJN for Nintendo (Friday the 13th, Jaws, and A Nightmare On Elm Street) were all that bad really. I actually liked all three of them on some level. Jaws is just a notch above average in terms of gameplay. It's actually fairly simple.

You start off in the boat sailing down from one port to the other. The whole point is to collect power-ups by defeating enemies on the action screen. The stars give you point bonuses, the crab will make you swim slightly faster, and the conch shell is money. Sail back and forth between the two ports and, if you have enough conch shells, you will purchase uprgades. First you get a tracker so you will be alerted to when Jaws is nearby. After that, your power level will raise by one level each time you purchase an upgrade. If you play to the point where you max out at Power Level 9, then you will get an extra strobe during the "Kill Jaws" mini-game.

Your character is a scuba diver who fights manta rays, jelly fish, small sharks, and of course, Jaws. You have unlimited ammo in the form of harpoons. The control is just a little stiff on swimming. One important thing to note is that you want to spend as little time near the coast as possible when sailing. If "you hit something" when near the coast, the action scene takes place in shallow water, which is virtually suicidal.

The points system is actually rewarding to the player. If you get 35,000 points without dying, on the main screen a mini-submarine will appear. Once you have this, during an action screen you will be in a smaller mini submarine that is much faster and more maneuverable, plus it shoots faster and can even unload bombs allowing you to attack at above angles, making it very useful. As an added bonus, if you get hit, you will not die, but instead you will unfortunately lose the submarine. When you die, you lose all your conch shells and points, plus if you have upgraded your power level, it will be cut in half. In short, dying sucks and you might as well start the game over.

This game can be beaten pretty quickly. All you have to do is collect a few conch shells and upgrade to about power level 4. Fight Jaws and when his energy is depleted, you go to the "Kill Jaws" minigame. All you do is wait for his fin to be directly in front of the stem of the boat just behind the first animated wave, then press A to use the strobe. Jaws will fly out of the water. Hesitate just a fraction of a second and stab him with the stem of the boat by pressing B. The timing is tricky, but if you got him, the stem will puncture him and he will float down to the bottom of the ocean. Game over.

So yes, the game is repetitive and pretty simplistic. But this is the 8 bit Nintendo era, and games were alot simpler back then. This is just a simple game of surviving the onslaught of undersea creatures and learning their attack patterns, then beating Jaws when properly leveled up. The music is a little lacking and the animation is pretty low grade, but I still happen to like this simple approach to classic Nintendo gaming. It doesn't take much time to master, but it sure is satisfying when you hear that magical sound effect and see Jaws stabbed in the face.

This game isn't for everyone, but for a good quick play once in a while, pop it in and go shark hunting!
