More About the Author

Jay Kordich was born in 1923 just outside San Diego, California. He grew up in the shadow of his hard working father who was a fisherman and captain of his own fishing boat. Jay learned early on the value of a hard day's work. He also grew and developed the muscles that would serve him well as a football player at the University of Southern California.

In 1948 at the age of 25, Jay was diagnosed with a serious illness and was told he may not have long to live. After reviewing all the treatments available, he left California and traveled to New York City to see Dr. Max Gerson who was treating terminally ill patients with fresh raw juices and healthy cleansing diets. Jay became his patient and immediately began a regimen of large doses of raw carrot/apple juice. It wasn't long before Jay's health was restored and the direction of his life was changed forever.

From a star athlete to surviving a life-threatening illness, all by the age of 26, Jay soon decided he wanted to spread the word of fresh juices and eating a healthy diet. For the next 40 years Jay took his message to anyone who would listen, from county fairs to large department stores to seaside juicing shops. It was his passion to teach everyone he could reach how to be healthy through the power of fresh juices.

In 1990 Jay appeared on his first, national infomercial and Americans embraced him. They were excited to hear his message of long life, health and vitality. He became a New York Times best selling author, speaker and lecturer and created audio and video programs to spread his message of good health through live foods.

Jay Kordich is best remembered from his somewhat batty infomercials that I remember watching as a child. Regardless of these odd commercials, He is really an example of great health and energy at any age. As an adult, I bought the juiceman juicer which came with a cassette tape of Jay Kordich explaining the power of juice, which made me want to learn more. I bought this book and was impressed with its layout and ideas, plus it gave me a better idea as to what Jay and his family eat and drink. Really I bought this book because I would like to be more like Jay Korvich prancing around in a gym suit and being strong, maybe minus the big eyebrows.

I like the layout--I can either flip through it for inspiration and ideas OR I can sit and read it in detail. The pictures are lovely and inspiring. There are a few publishing issues as mentioned by the other reviewer, but it doesn't greatly detract from the scope and enjoyment of the book.

I don't know what the previous reviewer is talking about, but this book is beautiful, wonderful and incredibly informative. I love Jay Kordich and he speaks the truth -- as his book shows -- it's all about fresh foods and sensible eating. The recipes in the book are fantastic. This book is even better than his "Power of Juicing" book. A classic.

According to the stars standard, four stars means "I like it", and I do. But, to be honest and objective for those who have read my reviews since the mid-nineties, I have to state a few important things about the book.

Let's start with all the positives:

I received this book as part of the purchase of the PowerGrind Pro Juicer, so it was inclusive. Perhaps this edition is the one that comes with the juicer, and maybe there is another edition, slightly different, that is for purchase? I don't know, but I hope so (comments later).
Nonetheless, I'm glad it came with the juicer.

The book is lovely and is definitely a great keepsake. The photos are so beautiful - the colors are so vibrant; and the food display is so creatively displayed, it just leaps right out of the page at you and is so tempting and mouth watering! THIS alone is worth having the book in your collection.

I think they did a nice job organizing recipes in their numbering system, and in their combining system - recommending 'this' to go with 'that'. I also appreciate the labeling of the various recipes by 'percent' - meaning these are 80% raw; or 100%, etc. I like that they color coded the pages, so that I can easily pick out the purple pages; or the orange pages etc.
I also like that they did their recipe pages with LARGE print as I find that very easy to read, obviously, but when something is larger, it subconsciously seems easier, and therefore more 'inviting', for some reason.
I think the book is simple, easy, and therefore is great for a person new to raw, or healthier eating, or even those who are experienced in eating raw/healthy but have said, "I just want simple! I'm tired of all the soaking, draining, straining, dehydrating, etc and just want EASY and fast!

I spent months in the library looking at raw food books.

When I saw this one in Barnes and Nobles I knew I had to have it!

It has every food combination beautiful colour photos and instructions

and wonderful recipes like raw mango pie, or strawberry or what ever

fruit you want to use. The crust is made from raw sunflower seeds and

and dates. It was delicious and that is just one recipe. Easy to make

no crazy hard to find ingredients.

Great Book buy it you won't be disappointed and I bought it from Amazon.

The first part of the book is dedicated to the philosophy of living foods and why to eat them; how to prepare them; even how to make changes in your kitchen and shopping habits to incorporate more living, raw foods in you diet. The second part of the book are recipes which require from basic to moderate preparation time. There are many color photos throughout the book and the recipes that I have prepared are very enjoyable.

So why the four stars? Before you purchase this book you must understand that Jay and Linda published the book themselves. Let's just say they are NOT publishers. There are many typos and sentences that are incomplete. There is a certain amount of disorganization to the book. Much of the first half is written very conversational style, which is fine, but don't expect a lot of scientific jargon to prove anything.

So do I recommend it? Yes, with the understanding there are a limited number of recipes; that this is clearly geared toward the reader that is unfamiliar with a living raw food diet; and that you give the Kordich's some grace when it comes to overall quality and readability.

Even if you do not want to eat 100% raw food (I don't, in fact I am not even a vegan) by incorporating some of the recipes and life-style changes mentioned in the book you can improve your health and gain more energy. In fact, I hope the Kordich's can soon publish another book with more recipes - I would be in line to buy it.
