4.0 out of 5 stars The streets is watchin' Jay-hovah's screen debut, June 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Jay Z:Streets Is Watching/Edited [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I was never a real big fan of rapper Jay-Z until his fourth album came out, "the life & times of S.Carter". This was his most famous album to date in which he made the song "Hard Knock Life" where rocafella records sampled a few bars from the movie "Annie". I loved that song. So then when I heard that rapper Jay-Z had a movie out I felt I had to get it. I went to Blockbuster Video & purchased the Streets is Watchin' VHS & soundtrack. Needless to say, I like this movie just as much as classic ganster films like Scarface, Public Enemy,Goodfellas & Donnie Brasco. It's no real storyline per say, like general theatrical releases, but just well choreographed skits acted out with tracks from the Streets is Watchin' soundtrack. Jay-Z is known for his "slow-flo" style of rap, & hearing this with some slamming beats from "Swiss Beats" the mood is set for some serious gang style soap opera drama. The soundtrack serves you with songs that set the tone for the actual scene. For instance, In "Friend or Foe" Jay-Z & his homies confront a Nino Brown wannabe for "hustlin'" on Jay-Z's territory after he'd been warned. In a sleazy hotel room Jay raps before taking the guys life. Also, Jay & Swiss Beats team up on "Face-Off" in a strip club sipping Crystall & rubbing on hunnies. This VHS is a must have for anybody who likes either ganster movies or hard-core rap music. Streets is Watchin' has got something to please both of these groups. The movie has fancy cars, fine women, gunplay, real urban life, betrayal, lies, glitz, glamour and more. I just hope Jay can put this on DVD so I can watch those cuties in strip club in all that digital clarity.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Streets is Watching Review, December 20, 2000

This review is from: Jay Z:Streets Is Watching/Edited [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I bought this movie the FIRST week it was available. Whether you are a Jay Z fan or not, this movie is for you. If you are just jumping on the bandwagon after the third or fourth album, this movie will have the songs off the first album. You will then want the first album Reasonable Doubt (its the best) I have been a HUGE fan since listing to him on street mix tapes since 1994. I do not lend my tape out at all. Once you see the movie you will fiend for some more of Jay Z and his Rocafella crew, you will be able to see more of a background from him. It is well worth the $$
