HANGIN' AROUND ATLANTA, January 12, 2011
This review is from: Jazz From Atlanta 1923-29 (Audio CD)
The main jazz recordings were made in New York, Chicago, and to a lesser extent New Orleans, but Timeless has produced a series featuring the territory bands. This CD features two fine outfits which recorded in Atlanta during the twenties. Charles Fulcher is represented by two sides recorded for Okeh in 1923, and thereafter for Columbia; five in 1925 (two by his Dance Trio), and one apiece in 1926 and 1929. It's worth noting that all were written by him, including "My Pretty Girl", the most famous version of which was by Jean Goldkette.
Warner's Seven Aces was the most prominent Atlanta band, which broadcast and toured extensively in America, and ventured to Europe in 1930. They also recorded first for Okeh, and two sides from 1923, and one from 1924, are included, and the remaing eleven numbers were recorded for Columbia between 1925 and 1927. These were both dance bands which could and did play hot in the jazz idiom.
These recordings were made on field trips by the recording companies, when the equipment was transported on a truck, and the set-up was done at a local ballroom. Nevertheless, it's apparent that those concerned knew what they were doing, and the excellence of the original recordings has been further enhanced by the late John R T Davies' remastering. Add to that a complete discography and an informative illustrated liner note and you have an excellent compilation.
