The best live recording of a "Basie-style" band available., September 22, 1999

Though not often heard of, Claude Bolling has been a jazz giant in France for over two decades. He has successfully put together a 16 piece big band that swings just as hard and sweet as any of the old Count Basie bands. His name came to prominence with several cross-over albums featuring classical artists such as Yo Yo Ma and Stephan Grappelli backed up by Bolling and his jazz trio. This recording has two great assetts in my mind: It is a stunning example of original and standard jazz in a live setting by a band that should be much more accessible, and it includes Bolling's tribute to Basie, a three part suite, that is worth the whole album.

There is an amazing mix on this CD, some familiar others not but nothing disappoints. Sheer listening pleasure.
