Excellent Remastering Plus Early 30's 'Stereo',
By
This review is from: Jazz Caravan (Audio CD)
Agree with the other review that this is a pretty good sampler with fine remastering. What really makes it special is that the final track, a medley of sorts, is a 'stereo' take from 1932. It was recorded with two turntables running simultaneously, and remastered using both sets. So it's a kind of fake 'stereo' but sounds terrific. It's almost eight minutes long, and perhaps worth it just for this track alone. It's available only in the huge Centennial box set and I'm glad to finally have it.

Best single-disc compilation of Ellington!,
By Comic Online (Washington, DC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jazz Caravan (Audio CD)
The music on this CD spans Duke's whole career from the late 1920's up to the early '70s. The vast majority of the selections come from the place they should come from, the 1930s & 1940s, in particular the wonderful early '40s band with Jimmy Blanton (bass) and Ben Webster (tenor sax). The sound is the best you'll find, and comes from the wonderful remastering that RCA/BMG/Bluebird did of all their Ellington catalog in 2000. If you're looking for the best single disc compilation of Ellington, this may be it.
