This episode of Ralph J. Gleason's 1960s TV show
Jazz Casual is a double-header. Submitted for your approval, we have saxophone legend Ben Webster, caught on tape a few years before his self-imposed exile to Europe, and blues-shouter Jimmy Witherspoon. To top it off, backing up this dynamic duo is the Vince Guaraldi trio, a few years off from their immortal gig as the house band for the "Peanuts" gang. 'Spoon is relaxed in his interview with Gleason, discussing his influences (Bessie Smith, Jay McShann, to name a few) and technique. Webster takes a solo spotlight for inspired readings of his Ellington-era classics "Chelsea Bridge" and "Cotton Club," and 'Spoon brings it on home with a great rendition of "Roll 'Em." Indeed, there was a time when giants roamed the earth.
