About the Artist

Legendary jazz pianist and evocative host Marian McPartland continues to showcase the jazz world's greatest artists in National Public Radio's longest running and most widely carried jazz program, Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz. Ms. McPartland began to teach herself Chopin waltzes by ear when she was only three years old. Later she pursued classical training at the Guildhall School of Music in London. She traveled throughout Europe during World War II, entertaining the Allied troops. While in France, she encountered and began to play with her future husband, famed Chicago cornetist Jimmy McPartland. In the United States after the war, Ms.McPartland heard the call of bebop and began to pursue other musical directions. She formed her own jazz trio and landed a two week stint at the renowned Hickory House in New York City. Two weeks turned into ten years, and at Hickory House, Ms. McPartland came into contact with musical colleagues such as Oscar Peterson, Benny Goodman, and Duke Ellington.

This is one of the most wonderful jazz albums I own. Simply because all of the songs are called "Christmas songs" should not prevent you from buying it today.
Marian McPartland's N.P.R. show "Piano Jazz" is a fixture in my home. She has introduced me to some of the finest new jazz artists and re-introduced me to some old jazz friends. On this CD, you can hear her playing "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" and several others including a terrific duet with Brad Mehldau ("O Tannenbaum"). Her friends range from trumpeter Jon Faddis to pianist Bob James, from trombonist J.J. Johnson to the redoubtable George Shearing playing his special arrangement of "Away in a Manger."
This album is a jazz treasure and a Christmas treasure, too. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Format: Audio CD
A wide variety of Yuletide favorites with a twist of Jazz played on the piano, no commentary between songs. There was a muted Miles sound trumpet on one tune. Very tastefully done.
