5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Christmas albums, year after year, December 28, 2009

This is a great Christmas album to play in the background while you make your cookies, entertain guests, or drink eggnog and wait for Santa. I love traditional jazz, but that's not what's on this album. It's a groovy selection of instrumental smooth jazz and vocals, and the selection works very well. Listen to the samples Amazon provides. They are a good representation of what you're going to get. Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Jazz? Nope. Easy listening, maybe., December 24, 2009

This review is from: Jazz Christmas (Audio CD)
First off, let me start by complimenting the production quality of the CD. The disc is recorded and mixed very well, and the sound quality can't be beat - for a CD that sounds more like pop or easy listening...

The title of the disc is misleading. This is not jazz, as least not in the John Coltrane/Miles Davis/Herbie Hancock/Joshua Redman/Diana Krall/Kurt Elling sense. Definitely not jazz (or even swing) in the Duke Ellington/Benny Goodman/Glenn Miller sense.

If they *had* to call this something with the word "jazz" in it, they should have modified the title appropriately by adding the dreaded "smooth" adjective. This is definitely a Smooth Jazz/Easy Listening/Adult Contemporary album. Jim Brickman? On a jazz album? Really?

I'm always confused why producers do this to albums - do they think the "jazz" title will sell more albums than those that are called "smooth jazz"? Are they hoping to pull the wool over the eyes of the classic jazz fans (i.e. not smooth jazz)? Is there some negative connotation to "A Smooth Jazz Christmas" or "An Easy Listening Christmas"?

I'm glad I listened to the preview of the tracks before I pulled the trigger. If you are looking for a good non-smooth jazz Christmas album, I can recommend "A Jazz Christmas - Hot Jazz for a Cool Night." It has a great collection of artists and songs and couldn't be more different from this album.A Jazz Christmas: Hot Jazz for a Cool Night
