But it's really not Jazz Collection: The Story of Jazz Piano as much as it's a fine sampler of some of the giants of early jazz and swing. The majority here is taken up by Jelly Roll Morton, Earl Hines, Fats Waller, Teddy Wilson, and Ellington. And while their respective cuts are fine, the whole history would have to also include the work of Bud Powell and Monk, not to mention at least a cut or two by the titan himself, Art Tatum. But for brevity's sake -- although not necessarily on chronology's behalf -- the compilers have also seen fit to give a nod to the hard bop world via a handful of sides by Horace Silver, Tommy Flanagan, Cedar Walton, and Hank Jones. So, instead of looking for a history lesson on wax here, this collection is best enjoyed as a fine, albeit somewhat pell-mell mix featuring some of the music's master pianists. ~ Stephen Cook
