John Heard is probably my favorite bass player--I've heard him play live well over 100 times going back to the early 1970's. For this album, only his second as a leader in a long fuitful carrer John put together a hard swinging talented group of L.A. players including the late, GREAT tenor man Herman Riley. Vertran Nolan Shaheed blows his butt off on trumpet and young lions Lorca Hart (Billy's son) and Danny Grisset round out the quinet. The arrangements are tight with not a whole lot of blowing space, but all take great advantage of the space they get. This is a great hardbop workout and anyone who loves the genre will be all over it!!
