Tombonista do bebop, desde cedo trabalha com grandes mestres, como Coleman Hawkins. Após o serviço militar, aos 24 anos Gee já gravava com Dizzy Gillespie e, em seguida, trabalha com Joe Morris, Gene Ammons e Sonny Stitt. Na década de 1950, integra a banda de Count Basie, trabalha com Illinois Jacquet e grava novamente com Gillespie. Em 1956 Gee parte em turnê pela Europa acompanhando Sarah Vaughan e, em 1959, passa a integrar a orquestra de Duke Ellington, com quem permaneceria até 1963, atuando algumas vezes como solista - ouça, por exemplo, seu desempenho em C Jam Blues - e compondo alguns números para a formidável orquestra. Depois disso, a carreira de Gee parece entrar em declínio, embora tenha ainda trabalhado com músicos importantes, como Paul Quinichette, Johnny Griffin e Brooks Kerr. Nos anos 1970, praticamente desaparece da cena jazzística - desconhecemos outro registro que não seja sua apresentação em New York, em 1975, ao lado de alguns integrantes da banda de Ellington. Gee nasceu em 1925 e morreu jovem, aos 54 anos. Trombonista versátil, dominava as sinuosas curvas do bebop e navegava tranquilo pela sonoridade enganosamente calma do cool jazz. Tendo iniciado os estudos musicais ao trompete, passa para o trombone aos 11 anos. Infelizmente, Gee só gravou um álbum como líder, Jazz By Gee, em 1956, para a Riverside, com Ernie Henry (as), Joe Knight (p), Wilbur Ware (b) e Arthur Taylor (d).
