This review is from: Jazz Icons: Art Farmer Live in '64 (DVD)
Flugelhornist ART FARMER is zenly intent in his inner groove here, examining notes like diamond facets under a spotlight. His uncommon telepathy with his guitarist Jim Hall creates a harmony and handoff that is a wonder to listen to and to watch.

Normally a trumpeter, Farmer went with the flugelhorn as a warm complement to the deft range of Hall's guitar. Between them they create an instinctive tango of inspired ideas, tasteful playing, and constant surprises. Watching this band you realize how completely they are watchful of each other. It's as if they are in a ritualistic trance divining shared revelations gleaned from every gesture. The rhythm section of Steve Swallow and Pete Laroca are the undercurrents that hold this mesmerizing ebb and flow on course. Almost in synch in a silent way are the photographers, who frame this noir set beautifully and with excellent apprehension of dynamic details. An excellent DVD in every respect.
