5.0 out of 5 stars Another Winning Set of Jazz Greats! July 29, 2012
By rayja
First off, I have only 3 of this 6 disc set. I will get the other three when they are available and I have the credits that I receive from my job. I got John Coltrane Live in France 1965. The tunes are; Naima, Ascension, Impressions, A Love Supreme, parts 1 & 2. This is a B & W, 52 minute DVD. There is only 12 minutes of A Love Supreme, the balance of the tapes were " lost ". The quality is very good, minimal artifacts from the original source. A lot of use of superimposed angle / views to give it a slick look for 1965. We have Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones. Great Stuff. Next, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers Live in France 1959. This is a 83 minute, B & W DVD. It is much better quality than the 1958 concert. It has some artifacts from the original, but not bad. It lacks that graininess that the 58 version has. We have Wayne Shorter, blowin' hot, Lee Morgan, always hot, I'll get anything with Lee Morgan in it. Walter Davis Jr. is on piano, this guy is great. Jymie Merrit on bass, great job and Art Blakey driving them on. This is a must have DVD. Then I have Johnny Griffin Live in France 1971. This is a 77 minute B & W DVD. It is filmed outdoors and has a somewhat " fuzzy " look to it, not as sharp as one would expect for 1971, but that said, the close-ups bring a much sharper view. We have Dizzy Gillespie on Hot House and a Night in Tunisia. Dizzy's blowing hot, as one would expect. Johnny Griffin is on fire as he always, Art Taylor on drums, Vince Benedetti on piano, and Alby Culaz on bass, all great. I can't wait to get the other 3, thanks again Jazz Icons for some great moments in history.

4.0 out of 5 stars black and white gems December 27, 2013

I didn't love all of it, I gave the Monk DVD away, mainly because I'm a drummer and Monk is solo on his footage but others may love it for those reasons. Great to see Freddie Hubbard Johnny Griffin, I didn't realise how 'jazz/rock' they were in an acoustic genre, exiting stuff. Art if wonderfull of course though a bit repetitious. Coltrane is Coltrane, intense an almost spiritual set, great footage of the other band members. Roland Kirk, interesting as ever. As usual from Jazz Icon, a mixed set, but generally worth having if your into enough of the content.

3.0 out of 5 stars Big price jump for set number 5 July 23, 2012
I hope the price comes down on this set. The other sets are priced well below this one on a per disc basis.
