I have always been a fan of Woody's bands in the 60's and this DVD from the Jazz Icon 4th series is a must have for anyone who digs more modern big bands.
The audio and video are both amazing considering this was recorded in 1964. The crew did an excellent job remastering this show.
The band is on fire -with fantastic arrangements, great solo players like Sal Nistico and Joe Romano on saxes, the incredible Phil Wilson on trombone, Paul Fontaine on trumpet and section works the is unsurpassed in most big bands.
Chuck Andrus (bass) Nat Pierce (piano) and Jake Hanna (drums)make up one of the best rhythm sections ever.
Add Bill Chase leading the trumpet section and you've got a true winner.
Many thanks to the team @ Jazz Icons for releasing such great jazz stuff!

This band was FANTASTIC! All through high school I studied this band and Jake Hanna's drumming. It is fire-breathing stuff and makes you come right out of your seat! It reminds me of how good jazz players were in those days.

I am thrilled that Jazz Icons did this so that we can relive this band, both audibly and now visually! Thanks! It is an iconic performance!

40's Swing bands had been the first flame of rocking youth, but by Beatlemania they were in danger of seeming like fogey music. Enter a wild Woody Herman with something to prove!

Startlingly, Herman comes out like a dervish with zeal to spare, rallying his 12-man horn army (!) into a breakneck frenzy that never lets up. Pushing 50, he looks like he wants to push age over a cliff, laughing. It's as if he were saying, 'Oh, you want energy, how about this?!' Fast as Techno and far more dynamic, this music scorches from start to finish. His crack team perfectly melds Swing and Bebop, with generous spotlights given to each player, while Herman remains the soulful fun at the hurricane's heart. Pianist and arranger Ned Pierce drives a team and repertoire as finely drilled as a gemstone, with a fierce rhythm section at his side. And the cavalcade of impressive horn solos is beyond description.

Fans of Fred Wesley & Maceo Parker, Tower of Power, Fela, Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers, and Ozomotli should perk their ears here. Even the liner notes by veteran Steve Voce are as incisive and fun as the disc. Grab your breath and hold on!

Have had this dvd a few years and just looked at it again. I'm amazed I haven't commented on it before now.

Several reviewers here have captured the excitement and overall quality of this performance, which is helped by wonderful camera work and surprisingly good sound. Its on my list of the very best big band dvd's available.

In late 1963 I was at Grinnell College in Iowa, where we had an annual Spring Day, never announced more than a few hours in advance. Classes were cancelled, picnics held and entertainment brought in. I'll never forget walking over to our outdoor theater and seeing Woody and the band sitting there. Their performance as the sun set was glorious. Very much like we see on this dvd. Probably about the same band. I had led a swing band in high school and in college had the pleasure of playing in one directed occasionally by Herbie Hancock, who attended Grinnell. So quite a thrill.

One feature of this recording is Sal Nistico. Buy it just for him.

The sad side of all this is what eventually happened to Woody. His trials with a cheating manager and the IRS, which forced him into late life bankruptcy. I keep thinking that if the media today promoted big band jazz it would have a great audience. Many thanks to the Canadian network that put this performance together.

I just found this magic lantern in my mailbox gave it a couple of rubs and I was transported back to an excellent time in the 60's . An analog time of real musicians and real instruments and real microphones, wow what a blast . Thank you Mr Herman for being a stickler for the sound and the fury controlled. I have only listened to three songs so far but what fun I cannot stop rockin out. Great performance ( LIVE ). Wooooooowwwwww.

Audio and video quality were wonderful, especially for that long ago.
Was disappointed that Bill Chase was not featured, even though he was advertised as being in the band.
Would recommend this disc to all my friends, as it brought back many great memories of the herd.

Thank you, Amazon - you do good work!!! I just ordered a Wayne Bergeron dandy!

As a big band jazz fan, finding this dvd of a Woody Herman concert was an unexpected surprise. The show features one of Woody's most talented Herds and the playlist is great. This brings back wonderful memories of seeing Woody live in the Sixties. The picture and sound are better than I expected when I ordered the dvd.

I just got this video and cannot stop watching it. Just amazing ensemble and solo playing. Being from the Boston area, I am familiar with many of the musicians on the band. You don't hear/see big band music like this now. This is truly an exciting band.
