Book Description

January 1996
Drawn from conversations with the jazz musician and jazz-club proprietor, Ronnie Scott, and with his friends and contemporaries, this book offers a portrait of the man, his music and his business, and marks the 35th anniversary of Ronnie Scott's Club in Soho. It follows Scott's story from his early days as a sharp-dressing, wisecracking young dance-band musician in wartime London, through the coming of rock 'n' roll, hipster fashions and jive talk, to the setting up of his now famous club. The result is both a biography and an offbeat picture of life at the margins in post-war Britain. The book is an updated edition of "Let's Join Hands and Contact the Living", published in 1986.

From Booklist

Flowerdew emphasizes interesting and useful interactions between different plants, between plants and animals, and between plants and their environment. He writes that plants can be used effectively to improve the environment, microclimate, and soil and to attract and provide shelter and food for other forms of life, which in turn benefit the plants. There's a detailed list of plants that are suitable for certain places in the garden or that thrive together. Flowerdew has practiced his principles of companion planting in his own garden in Norfolk, England; however, his approach is applicable here. Jacqui Hurst's 150 opulent color photographs accompany. George Cohen --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a way to garden!, January 18, 2000
By
Dawn M. Callahan (Seattle, Washington) - See all my reviews
This book is an excellent way to learn what to plant next to eachother or not in order to promote better growth, not to mention growing certain things to make your soil more viable and keeping away insects. I think this book is the best way to learn about organic gardening in an uncomplicated, interesting-to-read way. I have never been able to grow potatoes without somekind of rot or bug infesting and this whole time all I had to do was plant a pretty flowering tobacco next to it! Never again a problem.
