Book Description

November 8, 1999
Jazz Man's Journey chronicles the life and career of, Ellis Louis Marsalis, Jr., one of New Orleans' most vivacious and talented jazz musicians. From his childhood in a rural section of New Orleans, to solo appearances with the New Orleans/Louisiana Philharmonic, as well as appearances at Carnegie Recital Hall, Newport Jazz Festival, and Harvard University, this unprecedented biography accurately portrays Marsalis not only as a pianist and a Columbia recording artist, but also as a successful teacher, composer, lecturer, father, and human being. By conducting interviews with Marsalis and his family, as well as with some of his friends and professional acquaintances, D. Antoinette Handy provides comprehensive background on Marsalis, as well as a revealing personal narrative.

Complete with discography, dozens of photos from Marsalis's private collection, and a list of Marsalis "profundities," this book is an important addition to jazz studies, and an enjoyable read for jazz scholars and more casual fans alike.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Jazz stars Wynton and Branford Marsalis may be the most celebrated members of the famous musical clan, but as D. Antoinette Handy shows in Jazz Man's Journey, their father, pianist and educator Ellis Louis Marsalis Jr., is certainly the genius behind the scenes. The first work devoted to the respected artist and teacher, Handy's slim book chronicles the rise of Marsalis from aspiring musician to legendary mentor. Though as a young man he did perform with some big names, notably saxophonist Ornette Coleman, Marsalis was never able to forge a successful career as a pianist, so he turned to teaching music as a way to support his family. It was in this role that he found his true calling, helping to launch the careers of, among others, Terence Blanchard and Harry Connick Jr., as well as his own sons. It can certainly be said that his greatest "compositions" are the well-rounded and talented human beings he raised and mentored. Handy's treatment of the elder Marsalis's life and art is lively and informed, providing a needed fleshing out of the Marsalis mystique. Today, he heads a jazz program at the University of New Orleans and has over a dozen recordings as a leader. Just don't call him an overnight star: "I don't consider myself a success," he says. "I consider myself a survivor." --Eugene Holley Jr.
