Taschen, the independent European-based art book publisher comes up with some creatively graphic books on all subjects. This one really impressed me and I can easily recommend it to anyone with a general interest in 1920-30 jazz. It's even a nice gift for an advanced collector (which I consider myself).

No it's not a reference book per se but rather a "celebration" the legends of Jazz in both pictures and sound. If I read the title page correctly, the book was originally published in 2007 in Germany (probably in German). This is the 2013 edition and is fully in English. After a brief introduction, the authors (one composed the text; the other the illustrations) provide basic info on 23 jazz icons from Louis Armstrong to Bessie Smith Ethel Waters and Benny Goodman to tapper Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. The book also includes a 20-track CD with early recordings of the artists profiled and - yes, even though Robinson was more a tapper than a singer, his recording (one of my favs) of "Ain't Misbehavin' (from "Blackbirds of 1929" is on the CD. I like the clever way that Schaal (the author of the text) names his chapters. Jelly Roll Morton, who CLAIMS he invented jazz (he didn't) has his profile tiled "the Big Mouth", Willie "the Lion" Smith is called the "Cat in The Cellar, and Robinson is rightfully called "The Dancing Drummer".

This is a large "coffee table" 146-page book and the illustrations - including artist-drawn reproductions of early record label and even a "sonogram" (yes the monitors they use on recording machines) of each of the 20 tracks - are ingenious and attractive. The facts all appear correct. I didn't notice any obvious errors, but as I said this is a book to look at and listen to.

Another winner for Taschen.

I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.

For Jazz and Arts lovers. Interesting info, nice illustrations. Not a book on Jazz history. An interesting book in a specific part of the history and some of their leaders. This is the opposite to an ebook: this book confirms why paper books will survive. Perfect for a present.

For interested in Jazz history I recommend the book by Gioia: The History of Jazz.

It's a present for my husband's birthday which is not until November. Have not given the book to him yet.
