Book Description

September 1993
This work portrays the giants of jazz, relates what they achieved, and tells how they made their way in a world not always ready for them. The text offers a clear, informative history of the art, and the photographs present Coleman Hawkins, Count Basie, Charles Mingus, Benny Godman, Louis Armstrong and scores of others. These haunting photographs are supplemented with some rare vintage prints to tell the whole story of jazz from Buddy Bolden to Anthony Braxton.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this survey of jazz history, profiles of superstars and lesser-known artists are interspersed with new and rare photographs.

From Library Journal

Renowned jazz critic Morgenstern, director of the Rutgers University Institute of Jazz Studies and past editor-in-chief of Down Beat magazine, here couples his formidable knowledge of jazz music and musicians with dozens of photographs by Brask, who shot the covers of many jazz albums. There is also a foreword by the late Dizzy Gillespie. The result "is a lavish and well-produced volume, successful both as an art book and a jazz survey" ( LJ 2/15/77). A worthy title for any collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning portfolio of jazz photographs, February 27, 2011
By
This review is from: Jazz People (Paperback)
This is a heavy, portfolio-sized, coffee-table book even in its paperback edition. There are stunning photographs on every page, most of them new to this much-read follower of the music. Along with the photographs on each page is just the right amount of text (actually, it's context, providing a more specific setting for each of the photos by Ole Brask). Text is by Dan Morgenstern with forward by Dizzy Gillespie and introduction by James Jones.

Since the book is presently not pictured on Amazon, the reader should be aware that the photo cover is of Benny Goodman and Red Norvo. (The drummer, seen in half profile, I would guess to be Jo Jones.)
