5.0 out of 5 stars Music leading the way blending classical, jazz and celtic in universal language of piano, December 16, 2007

This review is from: Jazz Piano of a Celtic Soul (Audio CD)
I just love this CD and it is definitely one of my favorites. In this unprecedented collection of piano solo's the meeting of classical, jazz and celtic genres as played and arranged by Peter O'Brien achieves what every musician should aim for: sheer delight. He is obviously an accomplished musician and adept pianist, but he has an additional ability only found in a few experts, namely the ability to convey the essence of what some may call the soul. His performance and the compositions are not just thoroughly enjoyable, they also evoke a range of emotions, ranging from happy to sad, melancholic to flirty and fun. O'Brien makes the music seem even more fundamental to the human species than language itself, and his ability to convey emotion through his music is unsurpassed.
To introduce the CD, O'Brien plays an interpretation of Bach's Prelude No 9, and ends with a piece Mozart wrote in honour of Bach. The jazz includes a superb version of Fats Waller's Aint Misbehavin' and the popular When Irish Eyes Are Smiling bring a smile to the listeners. The collection of pieces on this CD are all special, but Macushla, originally written in 1911 for Count John McCormack, is probably the most beautiful piece O'Brien has chosen to interpret in this collection.
