The Jazz Prophets One Month Before the Cafe Bohemia,
By jazz lover since 1960 (Tampa, Fl. and Franklin, NC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: And the Jazz Prophets 1 (Audio CD)
This was recorded in the studio on 4/4/56, one month before the classic "Round About Midnight at the Cafe Bohemia." The latter is a 2 disc set. I can't say if either of these recordings is better than the other, but I can say that this CD is just fine. Besides, anything that contains the tenor sax playing of J.R. Monterose is essential to me. I am a J.R. fanatic, and have many of his recordings. (See my reviews on Amazon of J. R.'s recordings.)
Kenny's group is the same on both dates, with the exception of the pianist. On this CD, Dick Katz plays piano. On the Cafe Bohemia session, Bobby Timmons plays piano. Dick is a very good pianist. Kenny is a prime example of a neglected jazz musician. He never achieved the fame of his contemporaries Dizzy Gillespie or Miles Davis. He labored in their shadows until his death in 1972. But his playing is as good as any other trumpeter. I notice this CD is commanding exorbitant prices on the internet now. You would be better off getting the Cafe Bohemia set for less. Unless you can find this in the cutout bins in your local CD store like I did. Wait a minute. Are their any CD stores left? |
