Book Description

February 15, 2009
For more than 25 years, Jean Germain captured images of Big Band era legends in performances at the annual Sarasota Jazz Festival. Photographs of regulars - like Milt Hinton - show them at various stages in their careers. Other images showcase well known festival visitors like Tito Puento, Gerry Mulligan, Cleo Laine, Doc Cheatham, George Shearing, Diana Krall and Lionel Hampton.Unlike traditional studio, rehearsal and performance pictures, these jazz portraits reveal a love affair between the photographer and her subjects, and a unique aspect of the passion and energy that kept many of these jazz greats performing into their 80s and 90s.Whether it's "Sweets" Edison and Snooky Young reuniting after 30 years, Bucky and John Pizzarelli - father and son guitarists - playing together, or Eartha Kitt showing that she has still great legs at 80, Jean's photos portray more than the pleasure of these artists making music. Her lively images convey the energy, passion and spirit of these jazz greats, for whom music burns like an immortal flame, no matter what their age.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Whether it's former Johnny Carson band members, Harry "Sweets" Edison and Snooky Young reuniting after 30 years or Ertha Kitt showing that she still had "it" at 80, photographer Jean Germain found a way to freeze those some time illusive yet historic moments. Her photos portray more than just the pure joy that these musicians got jamming together; they convey the energy, passion and spirit of these jazz greats no matter their age. This book is a retrospective (a snap shot in time) and Germain's photographs will certainly serve to preserve the place in history that the Big Bands played in America's culture.

From the Author

Keeping jazz alive has been the mission since I met Hal Davis (Benny Goodman's publicist) back in 1980 when we founded the Jazz Club of Sarasota (Florida). So often I found immense joy in photographing the legends as they mentored the "youngsters". Whether it was Bucky and John Pizzarelli, Milt Hinton with Howard Alden, or Clark Terry showing Byron Stripling the ropes, it was here that I was able to capture the torch being passed. It is a true honor to bring the Big Bands into the 21st century!
