Editorial Reviews

The search for the intersection of the world's greatest musical art forms, classical and jazz, has been attempted many times by many great musicians and composers from Stravinsky to Gershwin, Bernstein to Cage and Goodman to Yo-Yo Ma. Finally, this melding of both genres has been accomplished with the star-studded concert from award-winning producer Larry Rosen, Jazz and the Philharmonic. The show was shot as part of the Jazz Roots concert series in Miami January 2013 and will air as a national, primetime broadcast on PBS on February 28, 2014. Jazz and the Philharmonic features world-class, award winning stars in both jazz and classical music genres, exploring the music of composers Bach, Strauss, Copeland, Rodrigo, Gershwin, Mancini, Grusin, Corea and McFerrin.

It would be hard to imagine a better presentation of the fusion of classical and jazz music, played by some of the world's best musicians.

Hmm, where to start... Bobby McFerrin -- a singular force of music capable of seemingly inhuman vocal acrobatics. His improvisations throughout this DVD are a particular high point -- not to mention the duet with dancer Desmond Richardson which is unlike anything I've ever seen. Then piano master Chick Corea performs his thrilling Spanish Suite with trumpeter extraordinaire Terrence Blanchard and Metropolitan Opera star Eric Owens. It's a beautiful arrangement by a young Brazillian, Rafael Di Lima.

Then, the C.P.E. Bach's Solfeggietto with young pianist Elizabeth Roe paired with Terrence Blanchard's trumpet is a beautiful marriage of classical music and improvisation -- all arranged by Jorge Calandrelli, a master. Pianist and renowned film composer Dave Grusin's performance of his classic composition Mountain Dance with violinist Marc O'Connor is a rare treat. This arrangement is especially unique in its development, culminating in great solo by Mr. Grusin with a full big band backing him up. Plus, Grusin and O'Connor's version of Simple Gifts is just that -- a gift.

The DVD also includes some extras which I did not see in the broadcast which include Corea and McFerrin exploring Corea's famous piece, "Armando's Rhumba." These guys are limitless.

The recording and production are also first rate -- which is not surprising given the pedigree of producers (Larry Rosen) and engineers (Phil Ramone) involved.

This is a must see!

What an amazing conjunction of musicians, music, genres and performance. I wish I had seen this is so inspiring to see and hear music at this level, especially after being constantly bombarded by mediocre and/or amateur music and musicians on radio, tv and schools.

The unusual combinations of musicians and the material they chose to perform together was truly inspired...being a big fan of modern dance and Bobby McFerrin, I was floored to see the magnificent Desmond Richardson (Complexions Dance) moving to Bobby's Improvisations. Bobby never ceases to amaze me. When I was producing the hip-hop artist Doug E Fresh in the 80's I took him to see Bobby at the old Ritz in NYC. I wanted him to see things he was doing in hip-hop and how they had already been used by Bobby in his music. I was fortunate to, by chance, see and hear them duet when Bobby asked if there were any rappers in the audience. Any chance to see and hear Bobby in different configurations is always a must. This is a concert DVD that allows us to revel in it.

I also love the juxtaposition of European music/musicians and American music/musicians but ONLY if it works. Sometimes (as in "3rd Stream" music) it sounds forced and unnatural. Here the musical marriage of Chick Corea, Terence Blanchard, and Met Opera Star Eric Owens is amazing. Whoever did the arrangement of Rodrigo's signature guitar concerto is someone I would actually pay to study with. After Rodrigo, Miles and Gil did their immortal version of the composition. This conception of the piece doesn't let you down at is fresh and new and reminds me of how much I love Rodrigo. Add Miles, Gil and now Chick, Terence and Mr.

Chick Corea has a lot in common with John Lewis, though the differences are equally instructive. The pianist-leader of the Modern Jazz Quartet spent the better part of his career performing one composition, "Django," continually modifying and recording it, then re-modifying and re-recording it. An infectious dirge written as a tribute to the gypsy-guitarist Django Reinhardt, Lewis never got tired of playing it--regardless of context--orchestra, combo, solo. His career centered on this one original tune, perhaps to a greater degree than Brubeck-Desmond were wedded to Paul's "Take 5" (but not necessarily to the pleasure of either player).

Chick Corea has had much the same relation with his composition, "Spain," inspired by and directly indebted to, Roderigo's "Concierto de Arunjuez," which is forever engraved in many jazz listeners' consciousness by the Miles Davis and Gil Evans' Columbia recording, "Sketches of Spain." And it's Chick's recording, "Spain," that, like Lewis' "Django," has become his calling card, regardless of the place or musical context in which he's performing it.

The performance, nonetheless, proves the highlight of this concert, saving it from becoming another "Saturday Night at the Pops." Give credit to a rhythm section that swings in the context of an orchestra (recently I saw a Doc Severinsen concert where that was not the case), as well as to the excellent playing of both Chick and Terrence Blanchard (practically a Wynton sound-alike).
