A Jewel from Judy!, September 28, 2010
This review is from: Jazz Vocal Standards: featuring Judy Niemack (Hal Leonard Pro Vocal (Numbered)) (Paperback)
Finally, a sing-along book and CD for professional, auditioning, and aspiring vocalists that was put together and produced by a professional jazz vocalist and educator extraordinaire!
Judy Niemack, who has been working for years - not only as a performer, but as a dedicated music educator - has come up with this book-and-CD package based on her decades of experience (though she's still young, mind you!) 'on the battlefield', teaching young singers all over the world to find their own voice and style.
It contains 10 standards which are recommended for the 'starter kit' of every jazz (or torch) singer's repertoire; All of Me, Bye Bye Blackbird, Lover Man, Misty, My Funny Valentine, One Note Samba (Samba de uma nota so), Teach Me Tonight, Wave, and You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To.
What makes this product different from most other sing-along jazz CD's is that, accompanying each track, there is a recording allowing you to listen to how it's sung with a trio. Once you've learned it, those same wonderful backing tracks - played by professional musicians specifically chosen by Ms. Neimack for the task - are also with no voice added, which allow you to practice and sing your heart out.
If previously there was a problem with finding a sing-along CD in your key, this CD has a feature allowing you to connect it to your computer and move it to the key that YOU CHOOSE!
It's genius of a gift idea as well and I'm just happy to not have to fret about choosing a birthday or Christmas present for my younger singing friends for the next couple of years!

Wonderful Resource, September 29, 2010
This review is from: Jazz Vocal Standards: featuring Judy Niemack (Hal Leonard Pro Vocal (Numbered)) (Paperback)
Judy Niemack, is one of the most dynamic and thoughtful music educators around today in vocal jazz. Everything she does is meticulously and lovingly crafted and well thought through in terms of its application and versatility for singers. She knows how a jazz singer thinks and learns and that comes through in all her materials. This book is no exception.
I have used this book of standards to teach beginning jazz singing and improvisation to young singers as well as using it to correct problems or expand the craft of singers who have been at it for quite a while.
The vocal examples are stellar and the accompaniment track features pianist Fred Hersch, bassist Scott Colley and drummer Dick Weller. What a great trio!
Whether you are a jazz teacher or a singer trying to better your craft, this is a great tool to have in your box and I highly recommend it.
