What do these discs have to offer? Thirty-six of the greatest songs of all-time interpreted by exceptional jazz vocalists from Shirley Horn, Nancy Wilson and Carmen Lundy to Diana Krall, Jane Monheit and Karrin Allyson; from Jimmy Scott, Freddie Cole and Al Jarreau to Andy Bey, Kurt Elling and Michael Buble; and many more remarkable jazz vocalists. They are singing songs mostly from the Great American Songbook in their own impressive individual style. What a delightful way to unwind while listening to a variety of singers in a compilation setting such as these discs from Concord Records in 2006: "Jazz Vocalists: Hear & Now" Disc One and Disc Two.

If you will fully center your attention to the lyrics of each song, you'll find that Jane Monheit is taking a chance on love while Etta James and Vanessa Rubin are whining that there are no marriage knots for them. Carmen Lundy hasn't seen a crocus or a rosebud but she feels so gay in a melancholy way and wishing that it might as well be spring. Would you agree with Nancy Wilson that an older man is like an elegant wine?

Kurt Elling is dreaming in burgundy while Peter Cincotti is declaring his love of Paris in the springtime, in the fall, in the winter and every moment of the year. Kevin Mahogany couldn't bear it without you that is why he's not getting around much anymore. Jimmy Scott affirms that you don't know what love is until you've learn the meaning of the blues, until you've loved a love you have to lose, until you've faced the dawn with sleepless eyes.

Abbey Lincoln would like to know if there's a valley green with spring where her heart can go-a-journeying. Carla Cook reveals that as years go by she knows that the only one for her can only be you.

This is one of the best selections of contemporary jazz vocalists I have heard. Once I started listening, I was hooked and could not not stop playing it. It also introduced me to some artists and works I was not familiar with. As a nice bonus, the inside booklet contains not only a little blurb about each performer but also an image of the CD from which the song is from, making it easy to get more of the music you like.

When I first saw and read reviews of this CD set, I was excited and couldn't wait to order and receive it, as I am always on the lookout for smooth jazz vocalist easy listening music to play for my dinner party guests. Though Disc 1 has many well-done tunes including "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Nat King Cole's brother Freddy and "Cry Me a River" by Linda Ronstadt, it has several choppy, strident songs including Diana Krall's "Temptation" (she who is usually reliably mellow), so that I really wouldn't recommend playing that disc in its entirety for company listening, though you might take a few of the songs and make a mix of your own with better combinations. However, Disc 2 is FABULOUS and worth the price of the set, it runs about an hour and a half, and the singers and songs are marvelous, from Dianne Reeves' "We'll Be Together Again" through "You Don't Know What Love Is" by Jimmy Scott. This CD set is also a good introduction to modern jazz singers including Jane Monheit, Norah Jones & Karrin Allyson blended with seasoned pros such as Nancy Wilson, Al Jarreau & Abbey Lincoln for a good variety of jazz voices.

This is a great compilation of lots of great performers. It's fun to listen with the list of tunes with their artists in hand to see if you recognize each one. Good value with more than normal songs on each of the 2 CD's. I like to hit the shuffle on my player and with these I don't need to - it's already "mixed".

I love this cd. It's great for those evenings when you are bone tired, and want to hear something mellow. The cd arrived in excellent condition. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.
