4.0 out of 5 stars A Taste of Jazz for a Novice, September 23, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Jazz for When You're in Love (Audio CD)
Not being a huge jazz fan, I found this inexpensive CD a nice way to sample some really good music. . .it also encouraged me to look for and listen to some of the many artists represented here. I had forgotten how good Morgana King is and I definitely want to hear more of Etta Jones and Sonny Stitt. What a nice surprise this CD was!

It's safe to say compiler Todd Baran learned a little something from the Father & Son team (Joel & Adam Dorn), and I must say Todd did a pretty good job. Smooooooooooooooth from start to finish. on this collection we get 4 (Four) Jazz Vocal performances: Charles Brown (With Houston Person on Tenor Saxophone) "Never Let Me Go", which is a fantastic music conversation between these legends! Etta Jones (With Houston Person on Tenor Saxophone again) doing the show stopping favorite "Don't Misunderstand". Freddie Cole "Don't Change Your Mind About Me", which is a wonderful piece of work! Morgana King "My Funny Valentine"/"You Are So Beautiful"...Has there ever really been a bad Morgana King song? This Medley is no exception! (Take Note: Seek out more of her recordings, and you'll hear what I'm talking about). Just these 4 (Four) Vocal Gems are worth the price of this Compact Disc alone!

There is 1 (One) Comptempory Jazz masterpiece by Charles Earland & Eric Alexander "Always And Forever". Now we could have use at least 3 (Three) more Contemporary Jazz tracks which would have rounded out this collection real nice, and had that happened I'd probley would have given this 5 (Five) stars, instead of 4 (Four). Todd miss the mark on that. Nice 'Filler' Tracks by Cedar Walton, Sonny Stitt, Shirley Scott & Buck Hill, Kenny Burrell, Les McCann, Bud Shank, Kenny Barron, Houston Person & Teddy Edwards, complete this collection. This would be deemed as the weakest of this series...So far, but it's still a welcome to ANY lover of 'Real' Jazz music!

This is absolutely, positively one of the best Jazz collections I own, and I own a lot. All of the selections are awesome, especially Etta Jones's "Don't Misunderstand." I love this CD! Thank you Amazon.Com!
