Milt Jackson at the top of his form, January 22, 2001
This review is from: Jazz'n Samba (24bt) (Audio CD)
This is a marvelous album by Milt Jackson. He was always great to hear, and I can think of no better album by him than this one. He's surrounded by a small group that is typical of the setting he preferred when recording away from the MJQ. At that time, he used tenor player Jimmy Heath regularly, both as soloist and arranger. For this album, it was decided to have side 1 (of the vinyl LP) with a piano (Tommy Flanagan) and a hard bop style; side 2 consists of sambas, and Flanagan is replaced by two guitars. The whole album is given a great lift by the presence of bassist Richard Davis, whose lively playing is typical of his work. Connie Kay's tasty drumming is another plus. The first 4 tracks (i.e. side 1 of the LP) were included on the U.S. CD reissue of Jackson's "Statements" album. The entire album should be reissued in the U.S.

Classic Milt Jackson, June 19, 2011
This review is from: Jazz'n Samba (24bt) (Audio CD)
I have owned a vinyl copy of this album for many years and it has long been a favorite. It has a mostly bright and cheerful sound - very much in keeping with the "samba" theme - without compromising the jazz feeling and virtuosity that Milt Jackson brings to all his work. Personnel varies slightly between some of the tracks, three of which comprise vocals. Amongst the main participants are tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath, the ever-reliable Tommy Flanagan on piano and Connie Kay on drums. The CD case reproduces the original record covers, including Leonard Feather's liner notes and the technical quality of the recording is amazingly good, considering that it was recorded in 1964. Fine jazz for a summer night ! Highly recommended.

Excellent milt, as always, November 23, 2004
This review is from: Jazz'n Samba (24bt) (Audio CD)
This is an absolutely fantastic Milt Jackson release. As one reviewer below astutely pointed out, this does have some overlap with his "Statements" release (or vice-versa depending on your viewpoint), but this is quite frankly one of his releases that you shouldn't be without. Very often, contrary to the old saying, you can judge a book by its cover, and with the cool, suave and laid back vibe portrayed on the cover of this release, that's exactly what Milt delivers. From start to finish, Milt never fails to please, much like all of his releases around and up to this era.
Aside from Milt's releases of the 50's, a release that I cannot recommend highly enough, yet many people do not seem to know enough about is his double cd-set with Ray Charles called "SOUL BROTHERS, SOUL MEETING." Definitely, definitely, definitely, definitely pick that up when you have the chance. I have had that for almost 15 years now and still not three days go by when it's not played at least once.
As for this release, you should know by now as well - get it. You will not regret it.
