5.0 out of 5 stars Essential
This disc is one of the many odds and ends that floats around Brown's mammoth CD catalog. This disc is one of the many odds and ends that floats around Brown's mammoth CD catalog. For most core listeners the "StarTime" box set is probably enough, but for true fans (and old school rap and hip hop freaks) this CD is the mutherload of beats and funky grooves. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, can compare to the instrumental jam "JB's Monorail," a psychedelic funk jam that's out of this world. Lyn Collins is superb throughout. James pops in and out with yelps of encouragement, but for the most part it's Fred Wesley, Maceo and Collins laying down some serious groove.

5.0 out of 5 stars 6 stars of funk ....... at LEAST, March 14, 2005

This album is beyond describable, if you're a TRUE old school, funk fan that can appreciate the down home soul of James Brown's genius (and the talent of the JBs). My favorites slower funk grooves are "Same Beat" (smooth and awesome) and "Damn Right, I Am Somebody" (the bassline is unbeatable, it sounds great playing through speakers with an acoustic suspension cabinet) - favorite fast track is "If You Don't Get it the First Time..." (a hip, head-bobbing track that just makes you want to get up and jam). This CD deserves 6 stars but you can only give it 5. Only thing I would change is to omit the Lyn Collins tracks - I'm just not a fan of her voice - and add in Bobby Byrds' two biggest hits "Hot Pants - I'm Coming" and "I Know You Got Soul", and maybe "Doin' it To Death" (Funky Good Time). Then it would be a ten star album for sure!

5.0 out of 5 stars These Are The JBs!, January 18, 2002

If you love all things James Brown, then you must buy this collection of funky hits (tinged with more than a hint of jazz) he did with his 70's band, the JBs. Believe me, you will not be able to resist the beat! The excellent horn work of Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley are worth the price of the CD alone. The majority of the cuts are R&B dancing and roller skating classics, especially, "(It's Not The Express) It's The JBs Monorail", "Gimme Some More", "Pass The Peas", "Same Beat", and "Damn Right, I'm Somebody". "Think", with vocals by Lyn Collins, is just too funky for words. Don't pass this one by.

5.0 out of 5 stars ULTIMATE funk, November 30, 2001
This review is from: Jb's Funky People (Audio CD)
Together with 'THE BEST OF KOOL&THE GANG'..... T H I S is the ULTIMATE bit of funk that i've found so far. The tracks may not always have a "song structure" (and for me the women singers may be omitted..) - the funkiest bits in history are found here!!!!!!! Back in the day i waited with buying the album (and pt. 2) - but you shouldn't!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is da BOMB!, October 3, 1999

If you can't get down and get down to it with this CD, you can't get down. JB is as superb a producer as a singer. These tracks--esp. "Think (About It)"--got it goin' on like a chicken bone!

Lyn Collins puts all these modern so-called divas to shame, shame, shame. This girl knows her thang.

And JB is the ultimate Greek chorus--you can hear him in the background in nearly every track, pushing it right along. If this one don't groove ya', you just don't have it in ya'.

The ultimate JB collection. The three volume set is the holy trinity of Funk. Great vibes from Maceo, Wesley and JB. Lyn Collins is pure passion.
