This review is from: Jean-Henry D'Anglebert: Suites for Harpsichord (Audio CD)
17th Century French music is in a realm of it's own. What tune there may be is heavily decorated and filigreed with a complex resonance. I once had a recording of 17th Century French Lute music that was no different and even more vague. One does not look here for the crystalline purity of Bach or Scarlatti played on a piano. This is a denser experience. One must consciously imagine the period, the setting, the palace, the candle light, the heavy clothing, ladies gowns weighed forty pounds. The harpsichord was still relatively a new instrument at this time and not very nimble but you have the samples to clue you in. Great background music for polite conversations which is probably what it was composed for in it's time.
