The French Translation of Ackerman's 1986 Monograph on Gerome, February 3, 2011
This review is from: Jean-Leon Gerome. Monographie revisee et catalogue raisonne mis a jour (Les Orientalistes, Vol. 4) (French Edition) (Hardcover)
Gerome is one of the most gifted and interesting artists of the 1800s, and the creator of one of my favorite paintings: "Pygmalion and Galatea." Before Lawrence Des Cars' 2010 publication "Jean-Leon Gerome," before the traveling 2010 exhibition making its way from the Getty to the Musée d'Orsay and elsewhere, before the current frenzy of attention to Gerome, Ackerman was a voice in the wilderness, so to speak, praising Gerome's virtues while many academics and curators were still turning up their noses at him and glibly dismissing him as a minor artist, albeit a talented historical narrativist and orientalist. In this book Ackerman prophetically argues otherwise.
This biography and catalogue raisonne is essentially a French translation of Ackerman's excellent 1986 monograph (which I wish I owned), an abridged version of which is available in English under the title "Jean-Leon Gerome: His Life, His Work." It is a informative and readable biography with voluminous footnotes and a catalogue raisonne of Gerome's approx. 400 paintings and 75 sculptures. The original monograph is out-of-print and difficult to find. If you read French, this is a pricey but beautiful edition, and essential reading for those interested in Gerome. If you read only English, the afore-mentioned paperback abridgement is, lamentably, your only available alternative.

Jean Leon Gerome by Gerald M. Ackerman, December 3, 2003
This review is from: Jean-Leon Gerome. Monographie revisee et catalogue raisonne mis a jour (Les Orientalistes, Vol. 4) (French Edition) (Hardcover)
The book was delivered very quickly and in excellent condition. THe book itself is excellent, I only wish the description had mentioned that it was a French version. I purchased the book for my art school unfortunately I am the only French speaking person there. I would not have purchased it had I known.

The book was delivered very quickly and in excellent condition. The book itself is excellent, I only wish in the description it had been mentioned that it was a French version, I did not see the fine print that it was in French. I purchased the book for my art school unfortunately I am the only French speaking person there. I would not have purchased it had I known.
