56 paintings reproduced in vivid colour, July 2, 2006
This review is from: Jean-Michel Basquiat: Painting (Paperback)
JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT: Paintings and Drawings 1980-1988 is a collection of works organized for the February-March 1998 exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery. It contains 56 works on full-colour plates. Listing the paintings within is rather difficult because Basquiat left so many of them without titles, but among the titled works are "Pegasus", "Procession", "Duck", "Peruvian Maid", "Mao O.D.", "Blue Skies", "Toxic", "Ting", "Pink Devil", "Ancient Scientist", "Tesla vs. Edison", "Chicken Wings Three", "Alchemy", "Back of the Neck", "Italian Version of Popeye Has No Pork In His Diet", "Side View of an Oxen's Jaw", "Banker", and "Sheriff". There is also a brief comment by Larry Gagosian about how he came to know Basquiat.
The colours here are extremely vivid, more than any other Basquiat collection I know of. And I was thrilled to finally see "Pegasus" reproduced at a size large enough to make out its myriad details. While this collection contains no commentary--those curious about Basquiat's work should seek out the inexpensive Taschen guide--it's still a fine book.
