Book Description

February 15, 2006

Radio Again is pleased to present 8 classic radio performances by raconteur Jean Shepherd from the archives of Hartwest Productions.

The X Random Factor contains all the classic elements of Jean Shepherd's brilliant radio work, combining humor, story telling, kazoo playing, and general musings on everyday life and the nature of man; from being yanked into the world, the quicksand myth, to being left behind by the world around you.

So listen and enjoy The X Random Factor. Learn why there's a turtle on the cover, and remember there are 9 to 5 odds against anything in life. Keep your knees loose!

The radio programs in this collection, long lost and forgotten, were created in the mid 1960's by Shepherd for radio and television syndicator Hartwest Productions in the format heard on Shepherd's WOR shows of the day, right down to his familiar Bahn Frei theme music.

Includes liner notes with excerpts from EXCELSIOR, YOU FATHEAD! The Art and Enigma of JEAN SHEPHERD By Eugene B. Bergmann.

8 Audio CDs - Digitally Remastered and Restored. Each program is approximately 44 minutes. Total running time approximately 6 hours.

About the Author

Humorist Jean Shepherd 1921-1999, perhaps now best known as the creator/narrator of the perennial holiday movie favorite A Christmas Story, had a long career on radio which culminated during the period of 1956-1977 when he was heard most days on WOR radio in New York, a clear-channel station heard along the Eastern seaboard and points west. Shepherd's radio work was both unique and transitional in the development of today's talk radio. Shepherd could talk, and talk he did, touching his listeners intimately as if speaking to an audience of one. Shepherd was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2005.

I purchased a set of three of these Audio CD's for my Girlfriends Father for Christmas one year. He seemed to love them! He works as a Nationwide Claims Adjuster in my area and has tons of road time. He pop's a disk in, in the morning and has fun driving all day. 10/10 for this one!

(this is an identical review for all three products that I purchased!)

Fabulous to have these Jean Shepherd segments (and those in the SIX other box sets from Radio Again) preserved for posterity. This is Shepherd at his inimitable best, warts and all. Audio quality is uniformly superb---one almost wishes for a little AM radio static and signal fade so we could hear these shows the way we first heard them in the early 1960s. Point of order, however. These programs are definitely not UNABRIDGED. Theme music has been trimmed here and there, especially at the openings of shows, and the commercials are gone altogether, even though there's plenty of space on each CD to include them. Minor quibbles aside, I say, "Shepherd shows on CD, it's about time!" Flick Lives, indeed!

Great stuff for Shepherd fans, but not as good as the original radio broadcasts on WOR
