Autobiography of16th Century mystic Jeanne Guyon,
By A Customer
This review is from: Jeanne Guyon (Paperback)
This book is a must read for the true seeker. It tells the story of one woman's quest for union with God and the persecution she went through, the closer to the light she got. She was introduced at a young age to 'inward' prayer which changed her life dramatically. She was an inspiration to many, rich and poor. She wrote a small book explaining the 'silent' prayer and was persecuted terribly for it. But the more she was persecuted the more she was drawn by God to Himself.

Excellent message about God's workings in the life of Madam Guyon. This follower of God allowed nothing to stop her pursuit of intimacy with her Savior.

Her book Experiencing the Depths of Jesus Christ is terrific.
I have read it at least 5 times. It is a great Christian classic, which should be read by every Christian, as it is very simple and wonderful, and quite helpful in learning how to know Jesus much better. However, her Autobiography is quite lengthy, just page after page of a life of great difficulty, both in regard to how her family and society treat her, and with regard to the fairly primitive medical environment of that day in being able to evaluate and treat smallpox and other illnesses that affected her and her family. She had a life of great faith in God during and despite all of that. But, I just skimmed the entire book, and that's really all it was. I wasn't able to bring myself to read essentially the same thing over and over, throughout her childhood and the rest of her life. If I only read a really good Christian book one time, or just skim it only because it isn't something that one is going to read over and over to glean more and more wonderful insights and learnings from it each time, about God, Jesus, and our Holy Spirit, and our loving and wonderful relationship with them, then I don't recommend it to other people to buy. There are hundreds of Christian books that I've barely read once, or just skimmed, over the last 10 years. So, to me, if people read a Christian book once, and rave about it, but apparently it's not so good that they ever read it cover to cover again, or several more times, then that's not what I'm looking for. Versus books that I've read at least 5 times each over the last 10 years or so; or books that I've read at least 2-3 times each just upon initially coming across them, which I expect that I'll read at least 5 times or more, over the years, because they are so incredible. The latter category would include gloriously helpful books such as: -Liberty Savard's Shattering Your Strongholds, Breaking the Power, and The Unsurrendered Soul. -Jim Cymbala's Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire -Heidler's Experiencing the Spirit -Merlin Carother's Prison to Praise, Power in Praise, Answers to Praise, and Praise Works. -books on fasting by Bill Bright, Mahesh Chavda and Kingley Fletcher. -Wilkinson's Prayer of Jabez and Secrets of the Vine. -Fenelon's books, and Spiritual Guide by Michael Molinos, both contemporaries of Guyon. -Hearing God, by Peter Lord. -Watchman Nee's Spiritual Authority, Let Us Pray, and Release of the Spirit. -Andrew Murray's Humility, Living a Prayerful Life, Ministry of Intercessory Prayer. -Practicing His Presence by Lawrence and Laubach. -Frangipane's Three Battlegrounds, Holiness Truth and the Presence of God, and some others. -Torrey's How to Pray and Baptism with the Holy Spirit. -Margaret Therkelsen's Love Exchange. -E M Bounds' Purpose in Prayer. -Judson Cornwall's Let Us Praise and Ascending to Glory. -Spurgeon's Power in Praising God. -Don Gossetts's There's Dynamite in Praise. -All of Roy Hession's books. -F J Huegel's Bone of His Bone. and several others. |
