Book Description

October 19, 2001
Dietary denial is not part of the American dream! And now, thanks to internationally renowned food writer Jeanne Jones, Americans can have their cake and eat it too-- Devil's Food Cake with Fudge Frosting, that is. It's just one of more than 200 beloved comfort foods-- from Deviled Eggs and Barbecued Beef Sandwiches to Creamy Potato Salad, Stuffed Pork Chops, and Cinnamon Sour Cream Coffee Cake-- all "made over" to be significantly lower in calories, fat, and sodium without sacrificing any of the taste!

Each recipe is carefully explained with numbered steps, so there's never the possiblity of losing your place mid-dish, and each one includes an at-a-glance calorie and fat savings chart as well as a complete listing of the specific nutrients-- plus lots of serving ideas, recipe variations, storage tips, and cooking hints. Sprinkled throughout you'll also find charming American recipe lore, fascinating behind-the-scenes stories of how the most popular recipes were created. And in addition to her expertly-planned party menus, there's an extensive chapter of 33 amazing dessert recipes that includes Apple Crisp, Boston Cream Pie, and Strawberry Shortcake.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"How can old-fashioned cooking be good for you? Leave it to Jeanne Jones to show the way. Here, the 'Cook It Light' columnist takes on everything from macaroni and cheese to oysters Rockefeller and manages to lighten them tastefully. My favorite feature is the Homestyle Makeover notes that give the calories and fat of the original recipes and the new version. There is something very gratifying about saving all those fat grams and then getting to eat a real dinner!"--Susan Westmoreland, Director, Food Department, Good Housekeeping magazine

"Jeanne Jones is the Houdini of recipes-- she makes the fat and calories disappear! She used her magic to transform my readers' popular red velvet cake into a lighter and healthier version, and we love her for it!"--Heloise, "Hints from Heloise"

5.0 out of 5 stars This cookbook presents healthy recipes with great taste!, June 22, 1999
By A Customer
Jeanne Jones takes a selection of everyone's favorite dishes, cuts the extra fat & calories, and they still taste like Grandma used to make. Her recipes call for ingredients that most well stocked pantries will already have or are readily available at your local grocery store. The foods are hits with adults and children alike. If I had known eating healthy was this tasty and easy, I would have started years ago!

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful addition to healthy lifestyle, October 8, 2000
Nice cook book. I will use many of the recipes. Since I have to watch my fat and cholesterol intake I have always a keen eye on the food analysis. This cook book provides to each recipe a food analysis which should be read with some suspicion. Three examples: (1) Stuffed Fillet of Sole on page 168: the amount of cholestorol is rather 60 mg than 6 mg. (2) Chicken Cacciatore on page 204: Cholestrol is rather 96 mg than 20 mg and the fat is closer to 7 g than 2 g. (3) Pot Roast with Vegetables on page 248: Cholesterol is rather 142 mg than 68 mg. Use the book but watch the analysis.

5.0 out of 5 stars For any health conscious kitchen cookbook collection, March 8, 2003
This review is from: Jeanne Jones' Homestyle Cooking Made Healthy: 200 Classic American Favorites-- Low in Fat with All the Original Flavor! (Paperback)
Homestyle Cooking Made Healthy is a throughly impressive and "kitchen cook friendly" compilation of two hundred classic American dishes recreated in a low-fat format but still retaining all the original flavor of higher-calory, higher-fat versions of years past. From Carrot-Raisin Salad; Twice-Baked Potatoes; Scampi with Spaghetti; and Chicken Croquettes; to Chicken-Fried Steak with Country Gravy; Crunch Grain Waffles; Lobster and Broccoli Stir-Fry; and Black Bottom Pie, the recipes comprising Homestyle Cooking Made Healthy live up to the promise of lower fat content with no sacrifice to taste. Each recipes comes with a "Homestyle Makeover" side-bar showcasing before and after calorie and fat gram counts. Homestyle Cooking Made Healthy is a welcome and enthusiastically recommended addition to any health conscious kitchen cookbook collection!
