I was very excited to come across this CD having been an avid fan of authentic early music in general and Hesperion XXI in particular. Add a fascinating historical topic (15th century France) and a beautiful language (French) and you have the perfect product for me.

Having said that, I agree with other reviewers that this contains much less music than, for example, "Christophorus Columbus - Paraisos Paradisos", which surprised me actually because I was already familiar with Guillame duFay and other composers of that period. But the spoken dialog (drawn from authentic historical materials such as Jeanne's trial) is both interesting and beautiful (because it's in French!). I do wish there had been more music, though.

The book is wonderful and contains many interesting essays on Jeanne, the Hundred Years War, and other topics. All around a beautiful item to have, and it's definitely worth it to shell out the extra bucks to get the CDs as opposed to just the mp3s. Just be warned, the musical material is slight and less interesting than that of Christophorus Columbus.

Staying true to history this is an absolutely stunning tribute to the Savior of France. The music and the drama transport you back in time and you feel as if you are standing along side the Maid herself in both court and camp.

I own many of Jordi Savall's releases, including all of his prior book-like editions. They have been like taking a musical journey with an occasional oral recitation to enhance the subject matter. This release, however, is more like an oral recitation with some musical interludes. Production quality is very high, with plenty of artwork interspersed with the translations. This one will look good on your bookshelf.
However, how often it gets into your CD player will depend upon your passion for the story, your understanding of French, and your patience. Two stars, overall, because I was disappointed with the overall lack of musical content.

I had purchased a Hyperion XXI record "Nuevo Mundas" and liked it. Sure all the music was sung in Spanish but IT WAS MUSIC! well performed and and very well recorded. Their presentation (packaging) is over the top. Jeanne d'Arc was just silly. It is a book with I didn't count the # of languages (maybe Tagalog too) and 2 discs mainly involved in it's interpretation of Jeanne d'Arc's various interrogations during her imprisonment (I didn't read the English version of the book.
I'm an avowed Audiophile with over 45 years of Hi End (and other) Hi Fi Systems and currently have 40K$? worth of gear and a broad listening palette. I was subscribing to to Stereophile Mag and this came up as a music recommendation. I repeat there's no (or hardly any music on the 2 supplied CD's. If you speak French and think you might like 2 people (a crusty old man and a younger woman) speak to each other in Medieval Francais, this might be for you. The best thing is is the front cover. You are warned!!!
