4.0 out of 5 stars A Promising Start
This is Jebediah's debut album which shows great promise. There are some great tracks like 'Nothing Lasts Forever' and 'Fall Down' but they leave much to be desired. Jebediah's musical success has led to the American release of "Of Someday Shambles," which is a much more solid album and really shows that they're coming into their own sound. If your new to...

Im mainly writing this review to correct the other reviewer.

Although this is in fact a self titled effort it is not their debut album, it is in fact there third and was released after both 1997's "Slighlty Odway" and 1999's "Of Someday Shambles"

If your new to Jebediah, you should definately start with this album plus Jebediah's self titled album is an import that not many can afford anyway. Their split EP with Jimmy Eat World is excellent too.

Although this is in fact a self titled effort it is not their debut album, it is in fact there third and was released after both 1997's "Slighlty Odway" and 1999's "Of Someday Shambles"

The album as a whole would seem fairly obvious that it is not a debut due to it being a much more polished affair than either of the first two albums. Having said that it is what i would call a solid effort but after having a brilliant debut (followed by an alright but far too long and indulgent second, which contained some great songs but tends to really stretch on)this release lacks any sort of lasting quality and is simply just more Jebediah. Whilst it is consistent with most tracks being reasonable with a few standouts ("Fall Down" - novel use of bagpipes, and "Nothing Lasts Forever" - the absolute standout) both of which were unfortunately singles which usually points to some weaker fillers. The rest of the album is filled with solid but nothing too new or original songs (tracks #1, 10, 11, 12) and some albsolute sh#t (track 3).

Overall this would be placed second behind their actuall debut (Slightly Odway) and well ahead of a lacklustre second (Of Someday Shambles) in my humble opinion. I would recommened buying the debut first as it contains some absolute beauties ("Leaving Home", "Harpoon", "Invaders", "Military Strongman") whilst this seems as simply a more polished affair showcasing Jebediah songs but not really pushing any limits

good, not great

3 1/2 stars
