I got this bike free as a promotion and am using it to bicycle to and from work in a cycle friendly city. The good news is that folding bikes are a brilliant concept - especially if you live in an apartment and don't want to leave your bike out at night. In addition, there is an avid community of folding bike enthusiasts with lots of advice if you Google "folding" or "collapsible bikes" on the web. As for this bike, the gears have performed well in a hilly city and the gear guard protects clothes from getting caught in the chain. My chain fell off twice as I was getting used to the gears, but was easily fixable by hand in 20 seconds or so and now that I have practiced, I am having no problems. It might be advisable to take the bike into the shop once it arrives and have them give it a general tune up before you ride to ensure that brakes and spokes etc. are true after it has endured the shipping process to your door.



Once you get the hang of it, folding and unfolding this bike is a snap (45 seconds or less) - and you will probably bring that time down significantly by folding down certain parts and leaving others as is. One thing that is missing from the instructions is that when you are unfolding the bike, be sure to lift the center pin so the hinged pieces can fit, then drop it to lock the parts into place before folding it locked. I also exchanged the seat for a larger, more comfortable seat with springs since I use the bike daily and that has been a welcome improvement for my back.



In my research, it seemed like foldables vary between 25 - 30 pounds - so not feather light or anything, but it's definitely doable (and good exercise = ), plus it fits well in the trunk of the car, making it much more useful for trips without needing a bike rack on your car. The bike also fits on mass transit (bus or train). On a side note, a collapsible bike is a nice addition to a trip in Europe. Many trains have a "bike car" - or you can bring it on with you folded as luggage, allowing you to hop off and peddle around the city, which is a wonderful way to get around and see the sights in bike friendly places.



I have also heard great things about Citizen's collapsible bikes: www.citizenbikes.com. Be aware, some bikes fold up (all the parts remain attached) and some break apart into manageable pieces, which can be awkward to carry. I also saw a not so great review about "A bikes" - they have tiny wheels and are super collapsible, but I have heard that they require a lot of peddling to turn those tiny wheels. The 20" wheels on the Jeep Compass feel just about right. Enjoy!
