The author of the The Self-Sufficient Surburban Gardener ( LJ 4/15/83) here presents plans for a 200-square-foot high-yield, low-maintenance vegetable garden. His system is based on permanent, boxed, raised beds enriched by compost, watered by drip irrigation, and covered with plastic mulch. Growing space is increased with easily erected trellises, while the growing season is extended with portable plastic tunnels. Clear instructions for building these devices as well as seedling starter boxes, compost bin, and sifter are given. Tips on pest management include plans for a birdhouse and electric fence. A sample week-by-week planting plan shows how little time is required once the garden is established. Recommended. Peter C. Leonard, Carnegie Lib. of Pittsburgh
