The author of the The Self-Sufficient Surburban Gardener ( LJ 4/15/83) here presents plans for a 200-square-foot high-yield, low-maintenance vegetable garden. His system is based on permanent, boxed, raised beds enriched by compost, watered by drip irrigation, and covered with plastic mulch. Growing space is increased with easily erected trellises, while the growing season is extended with portable plastic tunnels. Clear instructions for building these devices as well as seedling starter boxes, compost bin, and sifter are given. Tips on pest management include plans for a birdhouse and electric fence. This is a great and practical gardening "how to" book, especially as regards raised beds. Jeff Ball has some ingenious ideas. Get it if you can find it; it is out of print now. I feel lucky to have found it on Amazon. Keep a lookout for all his books, and if you are really lucky, your newspaper will carry his weekly column. We have gardened for over 35 years, and still learn new things from him all the time.

Jeff Ball's 60 Minute Garden gives a new gardener a truly do-able garden plan to achieve sucess right from the get-go. But more than that, it gave this seasoned gardener lots of new ideas regarding vertical gardening and succession planting. I have at least ten gardening books, I'd rate this in my top three. I've already loaned it to another seasoned gardener and can't wait to hear what he has to say about it. This is a great garden book!
