Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Reviewed with Craig Peters' Bill Gates.

Gr. 5-8. Many young people want to know about the high-tech world's leaders, but these individuals are rarely covered in biographies for middle-graders. These titles in the new Internet Biographies series offer much-needed overviews. Brief but thorough, both books follow their subjects from childhood to their contemporary business successes. Bill Gates includes enough detail to satisfy tech- and business-savvy kids (it's particularly successful in outlining the basic issues of Microsoft's famous late 1990s antitrust lawsuit), and the language is plain, clear, and engaging. Similarly, Jeff Bezos is written in approachable, descriptive language that does a good job of presenting the roots of Bezos' entrepreneurial genius in his childhood and early adult years. In both titles, quotes from family and friends add legitimacy and interest and help create stronger portraits of each man and the scope of his revolutionary contribution. The accompanying photographs are not to be missed, particularly the large color images of the smug, adolescent Gates that will reassure many an awkward preteen. Gillian Engberg

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
"It's almost impossible to be in the same room with Bezos and not have a good time. He's relaxed, he's funny and he's disarmingly humble." ~ Journalist Katrina Brookner

Amazon.com is the most exciting site on the Internet, but how did the site get started? Judy Garty condenses the story of Amazon.com by telling the story of Jeff Bezos and his vision for the biggest bookstore on earth. She explains how Jeff Bezos left New York to start a business in Seattle, Washington. We learn about his experience with building computer programs and also learn about his childhood. There are interesting things like how Jeff Bezos had a pet raccoon as a child and how as an adult he paid $40,000 for a skeleton of an Ice Age cave bear. This is quite a short book with only forty-eight pages. Within the book there are many good pictures of Jeff as well as a picture of the Amazon.com company headquarters and warehouses.
