Book Description

March 25, 2008 Jeff Hawke
Widely considered one of the most important sci-fi comic strips ever published, Jeff Hawke is a benchmark in intelligent, adult-oriented storytelling!

Jeff Hawke’s not your average space-hero; focused on reasoning, diplomacy and moral virtues instead of brute force, he is frequently forced to be the ambassador — rather than the saviour — of mankind! His universe is populated with alien species that meet humankind by accident or for commerce, but hardly ever for invasion.

Patterson’s subtle wit makes the strip’s plots and characters as fascinating as they are amusing, and Jordan’s highly expressive style fully captures the strangeness of the weird and wonderful aliens of Jeff’s universe!

About the Author

Willie Patterson was a childhood friend of Sydney Jordan who began as a dialogue writer for Jeff Hawke but later took over plots and storylines, leading to what many consider the “golden age” of the strip.

Sydney Jordan is an ex-RAF pilot and a graduate of the Aeronautical Technical School, who long sought to exploit his skills in drawing aeroplanes in a sci-fi comic. In 1955 he met Eric Souster and Jim Gilbert, and together they created Jeff Hawke.

4.0 out of 5 stars Collection of Jeff Hawke stories in graphic novel form, April 7, 2008
This review is from: Jeff Hawke: Overlord (Hardcover)
Author Willie Patterson weaves four amusing tales of space adventures: Overlord, Survival, The Wondrous Lamp, and Counsel for the Defense. My favorite by far was The Wondrous Lamp, where aliens try to invade Earth but are about the size of ants. Each story is wonderfully humorous and suspenseful. And Sydney Jordan illustrates the characters in all their black and white glory. With original, unique aliens and a traditional pulp feel, Jeff Hawke is classic science fiction at its best.

Witty and clever, these stories will entertain any science fiction fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard SF and Great Art!, May 15, 2009

This review is from: Jeff Hawke: Overlord (Hardcover)
To their credit Sydney Jordan and Willie Patterson have created the brilliant JEFF HAWKE series (it ran from the 50s to the 80s), which was not printed in book form until this edition in two highly recommended volumes, nicely edited and printed by Titan Books. Fantastic black and white art and hard science fiction! We can only hope that the rest of this extraordinary series will soon follow!

1.0 out of 5 stars boring, trite and dated story line, May 11, 2009
This review is from: Jeff Hawke: Overlord (Hardcover)
Not being familiar with the sci-fi comics Jeff Hawkes, the promising coloured title and drawings intrigued me. This storyline is a series of collected weeklies cobbled together to form a plot.
The disappointment from seeing the coloured cover artwork to the actual product was palpable. The weakness here is in the size of the reproductions, as this is obviously a "fan" resurrection thing. The small black and white drawings do not help the case for pushing this as a "trend-setting" sci-fi series in its heyday.
Furthermore, the goofy plot jumps all over the place, with huge space beetles being decimated by pre-programmed robots. There does not seem to be a discernible plot which constantly evolves with dog faced aliens, huge gastropod-like monster besides others thrown in. The effect of all these various elements, although nicely drawn, appears confusing and convoluted. This cannot be compared to Dan Dare, another sci-fi comics, which had a charm of its own. Star wars this is not.
