The Thomas Jefferson Foundation's Monticello Classroom web site recommends Jefferson's Masterpiece to students & teachers.

From the Author

Jefferson's Masterpiece was written to teach middle school and older students about this very significant document in a format that would appeal to them. The story takes students on a historic journey about how the Declaration of Independence was written, edited, approved and signed. They will follow Thomas Jefferson as he writes the Declaration as well as experience the congressional and military events that took place between June 11 and August 2, 1776. In addition, they will get to observe the Founding Fathers when the United States of America was established.

The Publisher's Note must be communicated to your child/reader: "The is a work of fiction based on historical facts. The main characters, events and places were real. Fictional characters have been added to enrich the story. Some of the dialog is based on writings and speeches of the real people and some is the product of the author's imagination."

After all, how could the author know what Ben Franklin said to Thomas Jefferson, e.g., during idle chat on the morning of Thursday, June 13, 1776?

Beyond that issue, there are enough fine quotes, illustrations, images of documents and artifacts, historical facts, and presentations of the various drafts of the Declaration of Independence to make the book a fine resource for young readers.
