1.0 out of 5 stars Jehovah's Witnesses: A religion that writes it's own 5-star review, December 3, 2008
What happens when a religious organization and printing corporation writes a history about itself? You get an extremely biased view of a group that uses information control to keep it's members in a virtual mental coma. The Watchtower is quite successful in hiding it's true history from it's followers, while printing a constant flow of positive information. So much information is printed on a weekly basis, that Jehovah's Witnesses don't even have time to consider other viewpoints. And since Jehovah's Witnesses are not allowed to question their beliefs or the opinions of their Governing Body (at the risk of being labeled a dissenter or apostate, and subsequently expelled and cut off from their friends and families), they have little choice but to accept every word printed by the Watchtower as the final and ultimate "truth". Independent research will reveal a scary and sad history of false prophecies, failed predictions, cult practices, child abuse, and mind control tactics.

For a insider view of the Watchtower and it's internal practices, check out Crisis of Conscience, written by former Governing Body member Ray Franz.

1.0 out of 5 stars Write your own history., September 11, 2008
I'm sure every group would like to be able to re-write their own history, covering over the embarrassing bits. That's exactly what this book is. The sad thing is that witnesses are not allowed to look at outside sources of information, so they buy this hook, line, and sinker.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I'm OK), February 21, 2009
By Amaranth "music fan" (Northern California) - See all my reviews
"Jehovah's Witnesses: Proclaimers of God's Kingdom" is a fascinating, firsthand work by the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. Many apologetics groups who try to debate JWs simply follow talking points--when they should actually look at what JWs read and believe first. This book is essential to any apologist who wants to understand where JWs are coming from.

"Proclaimers of God's Kingdom" is a slick work. There are plenty of pictures, and enough statistics to fill the Guinness book. It skillfully glosses over the failed prophecies of the Apocalypse in 1914 and 1975. It doesn't mention how so many elder JWs are childless because they were constantly warned of the endtimes. Nor does it tell how JWs police married couples' intimate lives, forbidding marital sodomy.

"Proclaimers of God's Kingdom" shows the cult for what it truly is--selling books door-to-door. Children are banned from celebrating birthdays and Christmas, while adults are expected to surrender their day jobs and sex lives to the Watchtower. "Proclaimers" is a firsthand account of life within the Witnesses.
