A SHORT BUT HELPFUL CRITIQUE OF THE WATCHTOWER,
By
This review is from: Jehovah's Witnesses (How to Respond to World Religions) (Paperback)
Herbert Kern (born 1917) was a Lutheran pastor for 32 years, and was a member of the research committee for the International Lutheran Hour radio broadcast.
Here are some quotations from this booklet: "Jehovah's Witnesses are well-trained. They devote about 85 percent of their study time to Watchtower publications and 15 percent to their version of the Bible, the New World Translation." (Pg. 7) "If the Jehovah's Witnesses were to take literally the words in Revelation about the 144,000, not even their elite would be in heaven. Revelation 7:4 and 14:4 say that the only people who will appear before the heavenly throne are Israelites who 'did not defile themselves with women.' The truth is, the number is not to be understood literally." (Pg. 38) "For about 50 years---until 1928---the Watchtower organization used the Great Pyramid outside Cairo, Egypt, as a basis for the 1914 date. Charles T. Russell... held that the inches in the passageways of the Great Pyramid represented years." (Pg. 44) (Quote from Watchtower's 'Kingdom Ministry' publication for May 1974, pg. 3) "Reports are heard of brothers selling their homes and property and planning to finish out the rest of their days in this old system in the pioneer service. Certainly this is a fine way to spend the short time remaining before the wicked world's end." "Many Jehovah's Witnesses have died unnecessarily since the Watchtower Society banned blood transfusions in 1945. Those accepting blood transfusions are disfellowshipped and ostracized by other Jehovah's Witnesses---even family members." (Pg. 53)
