4.0 out of 5 stars A solid new recording, but not the best recording September 21, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
I've seen Jekyll & Hyde performed 14 times (between Broadway, National Tours, and a couple of local productions in various cities). I own every recording of the show, and have every song memorized. I say all of this not to brag, or to say that I'm a big fan of the show. I say these things to say that I come into this recording with certain expectations. Those expectations color my review, therefore, for better or for worse.

That said, this is definitely a solid new recording of Jekyll and Hyde. Constantine Maroulis, Deborah Cox and Teal Wicks are all competent in their parts. In the duets they gel very well, and on some songs like Someone Like You, they shine better than I really expected. Maroulis's Jekyll is fine, though I personally find his Hyde a bit lacking. Given this is a concept recording, and not a repetitive nightly performance, he really could have gone all out on Hyde, but instead seems to reign it in making his Hyde just sound a little more "rock" than his Jekyll.

The thing holds the album back, in my opinion, is some of the re-orchestrations. Songs like Bring on the Men is drastically changed from it's predecessor in terms of pacing and tempo for it's first half. This is the Moment, arguably the most recognized song from the show, loses almost all of the excitement that is present in the Broadway Cast Recording, though thankfully it doesn't slide back to the sing-songy recordings that preceeded the OBC. Truthfully, I think that's the sentiment that pervades this recording... the sense of power is gone and replaced with a sense of pop-vocalizing.

That seems strange to me since the power behind it's songs is one of Jekyll & Hydes main strengths.

By and large, if you've never heard a recording of Jekyll & Hyde, this is a fine album to check out to get a taste of the show. You definitely won't regret it because the cast here is very good (better than some members I've seen on Broadway/National Tours/etc.), and even with the reworkings, the music still works better than most other Broadway shows. If you're on the fence, I'd definitely say to buy this and give it a chance, at first listen it feels strange, but I do think this recording will grow on me. If you're a tried and true Jekkie, you don't need my review because you've already hit "buy".

5.0 out of 5 stars Jekyll and Hyde 2012 Concept Album: Totally unexpected! September 24, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Jekyll and Hyde 2012 Concept album is most definitely not what I expected. Although I did not see the original Broadway show, I was recently able to attend the new production currently in previews in So Calif. What I and many other very impressed patrons experienced was a first class production with outstanding leading ladies and an extremely talented leading man who brings a zest for life, surprising vocal power and unrepressed Tony-worthy acting skills to the infamous story which I love and know well. I imagined an album with all the demonic fire and unmitigated passion of this new and exciting 'revisal.'

Instead, I heard songs. I heard a story behind each song. I heard an album that is a stand-alone beautifully orchestrated, vocally riveting, innovative work of art which leaves an indelible impression of Jekyll and Hyde.
The Concept album is most definitely not what I expected, but in the course of a few minutes of play, it has become a favorite 'Broadway' album in my collection. I recommend it to any and all music lovers.
