Some good songs from a Great Musical,
This review is from: Jekyll and Hyde The Musical - Vocal Selections (Sheet music)
Ever since I first heard the 1994 Concept Cast Recording of Jekyll and Hyde I have been after the Vocal Selections for this great musical. So I bought this one and was slightly disappointed. However I will deal with the positives first. This book of Vocal Selections provides a great range of songs for male and female voices. For those male singers looking to test their ranges This is the Moment is a perfect choice. And for those looking for great character songs there is Alive and Confrontation. For female voices the ballads Someone Like You and In His Eyes are provided which are two very beautiful songs given justice by the very good piano accompaniment. There are also two great duet pieces, Take Me as I Am and It's a Dangerous Game. There are also some great photos from the Broadway production along with information from the Lyricist and Composer. However I do have a few problems with this book. A few of the great songs from the Concept Album are not in this. The first major exclusion is the incredibly difficult sing, I Need to Know. The second is Transformation. The last problem is that some of the notes have been changed to make some of the songs easier. For example the last note of Alive! is no longer an incredible high "A" but an "E" Though the positives do indeed outweigh the negatives. There is a wide selection of songs (refer to song list) all equipped with great piano accompaniment. Song List = Lost In the Darkness. Take Me as I Am. No One Knows Who I Am. Good and Evil. This Is The Moment. Alive! Sympathy, Tenderness. Someone Like You. Murder, Murder! Once Upon A Dream. In His Eyes. It's A Dangerous Game. A New Life. Confrontation

Alive! Reprise is missing,
By A Customer
This review is from: Jekyll and Hyde The Musical - Vocal Selections (Sheet music)
I bought this book, expecting to see both parts of "Alive!" in it. For those of you who have the Concept Cast recording, it's the second half of the song, for those with the Broadway cast, it's a few tracks later. In any case, the reprise is much more dramatic, difficult, and impressive, and some of the music is different. Boo to Cherry Lane Music for dumbing this down.

Great music, easy piano fake book style...,
This review is from: Jekyll and Hyde The Musical - Vocal Selections (Sheet music)
I love Jekyll and Hyde, don't get me wrong, but this arrangement was terrible!
I'm sorry but I was expecting a bit better. Though I am very glad to have this music, I felt like all the arranger did was put some (broken) chords in the left hand and reprint the melody the vocalist is alread singing in the right hand. Duet CHaracters are missing and the arrangement of In His Eyes is screwed BIG TIME! I wanted to do this piece but had to resort to the Singer's Anthology, (which by the way in the third soprano volume, has a spectacular arrangement for this song. The third tenor book also does justice to the awesome "ALIVE!") Also It is missing notes, such as the high "F" Lucy hits is brought down to a "D" and the final note is a "Bb". What's up with that? (The singer's anthology does not have the duet part, but makes it incredibly easy to figure it out, plus it has awesome countermelodies, the way an accompaniment is SUPPOSED to sound. Overall, I'm glad I have the music, but I feel like I'm playing my Disney beginner's book with all the usually big notes shrunk for the purpose of ridding itself of the title "EASY PIANO". Since there's nothing else out there I know of with some of these arrangements, I suppose this will have to make due.

Great Book, but missing songs.,

This review is from: Jekyll and Hyde The Musical - Vocal Selections (Sheet music)
I have seen this play off broadway at local theatres, and There have always been songs on it which were different. I understand there have been different versions of this show. The newer version of the play has additional songs, such as "I Need to Know" sung by Jekyll and a song called "Bring on the Men" sung by the Red Rat Dancers (this song replaced "No one knows who I am"). Along With these, others songs are missing. The following songs are missing from the book: I Need To Know, Bring on The Men, Letting Go, You Have Your Work and Nothing More (Quartet sung by Jekyll, John, Sir Danvers, and Emma), I've Got to carry on, My Dear Simon, The Games we Could Play, Preaching to the Board of Governors, Half of "Alive!", The Reprise of "Alive!" and the 3 Reprises of Facade. So it's basically missing 13 & 1/2 songs. I guess the book would have been to big. I guess that's why it's called Vocal Selections because it is only Selections from Jekyll and Hyde. But the most important songs are on it. Great Sheet Music and Lyrics, The missing songs is the only thing that earned it a 4 instead of a 5. It is definately worth buying.

Beautiful Music. Dissapointing book.,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Jekyll and Hyde The Musical - Vocal Selections (Sheet music)
I love Jekyll and Hyde, and I'm a Jekkie. So honestly, I expected much more.
While the score is beautiful, the sheet music is lacking. First off- All the duets, (IE. Dangerous Game) don't have the different characters written in. While this means they can be sung as solos, they could have written the name and the performer have ignored them. Second- Alive has been butchered to its very core. Its second half-(What I hear is actually the reprise of it) is very good and is the whole reason I bought the book. In this case, however, its missing. What this means is that it was probably shortened with the idea of an audition. Second, the last note Hyde hits in Alive! has been changed from a High A to a E. Easily fixable, but annoying. If you have the 1994 concept album with Anthony Warlow and were expecting things like 'I need to Know' and 'Bring On the men', these won't be found here as they are cut from most shows. Don't fear-these can be found in 'The World of Jekyll and Hyde' sheet book. Its hard for me to reccomend this. However, if you really need 'This is The Moment' sheet music, this is the easiest way to get it. But, if you ever find the now out-of-print CONCEPT ALBUM of Jekyll and Hyde Sheet music, that has all these things fixed, grab that.

The book was just what we were looking for. The only thing I would have wanted to know before purchasing was the difficulty level of the piano accompaniment.

I love the power, the lyricism, the beauty of this musical. The vocal selections book offers above average piano reductions of an operatic score.
Some of the songs are reduced too greatly, and this may disappoint the more accomplished pianist. As a whole, the music is moderately challenging. If one uses the transcription as a guide, the fairly talented pianist can take this music and recreate the beauty of the orchestra. Four and a half stars may be more appropriate for this work, however, as some liberties may have been taken by the writers (as noted in other reviews). Enjoy!

This is the Vocal Book!,
This review is from: Jekyll and Hyde The Musical - Vocal Selections (Sheet music)
I recently went to Neil Berg's 100 Years of Broadway at my local theater. It was an amazing show and one of the highlights for me was hearing the original star of the hit Broadway musical Jekyll and Hyde sing This is the Moment. After hearing that, I went home and got out my copy of the vocal selections form this fantastic musical. The first few pages are glossy stills form the theatrical show. The shots look a little vintage but I personally do not mind. Following that is a credit list of all the people who made show and stared in it. After that is a song list as well as a page on the making of Jekyll and Hyde, a note from composer Frank Wildhorn, a synopsis of the show, and bios for Leslie Bricusse ( Book and Lyrics) and Frank Wildhorn (Music). Next you have the vocal music which is in a nice big print. Over all, the book really captures the show and is filled with a lot of potential 16 bar cuttings for auditions or even recital pieces. I would check out the cast recording of the musical,Jekyll & Hyde - The Musical (1997 Original Broadway Cast), as well as the filmed version of the stage show,Jekyll & Hyde - The Musical.

I was so anxious to receive this music book and when I was received it, I was pleasantly surprised. Most (if not all) of the music from the musical was included. It was interesting to see the various keys of the songs. Great music book and makes for many fun hours of play and orchestrations. :)
